About the Position

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Academic and Retention Coordinator to join our team in the College of Science. As a key member of the Office of Academic and Student Affairs, you will play a vital role in promoting student success and retention throughout the undergraduate experience.

Responsibilities
  • Provide academic advising and support to students declared in majors and minors in the College of Science.
  • Develop and implement academic support programs and services to enhance student success, including workshops on study skills and campus resources for tutoring and academic coaching.
  • Participate in university-sponsored orientation events and collaborate with faculty advisors and dean's office staff to develop holistic, individualized success plans for students.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for faculty and staff on best practices in student success and retention.
  • Collaborate with university stakeholders to develop and implement retention strategies that align with institutional goals and priorities.
  • Work with students who have been placed on academic warning or probation, and those returning from academic suspension, to support their academic success.
  • Help provide a coordinated approach to transfer student support by maintaining knowledge of transfer articulation agreements and course equivalencies.
  • Remain current on COS and Mason academic policies and resources.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience as an academic or education advisor or in a related field (typically three or more years).
  • Knowledge of academic advising principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks.
  • Skilled proficiency in using modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and software relevant to work performed.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively develop and implement programs and events.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with diverse groups.
  • Valid Driver's License or ability to obtain.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience with student information systems (e.g., Banner, Navigate, etc.).
