The OPPORTUNITY

Builders Mutual is in search of a seasoned advisor to take on the pivotal role of Vice President/General Counsel. This newly established position will deliver essential legal support to the Company, the CEO, the Board, and the Executive management team. In this high-level capacity, you will manage all legal matters, including general counsel, governance, contract oversight, regulatory adherence, litigation management, coordination with external counsel, and any other legal issues pertinent to our organization.

As a prominent leader, the Vice President/General Counsel will spearhead our legal initiatives. We seek a candidate with extensive legal expertise, adaptability, and innovative thinking, complemented by strong strategic and analytical capabilities and a proven history in legal administration. Your responsibilities will not only encompass managing legal functions but also fostering collaboration and nurturing robust relationships within our organization.

Your ROLE as Vice President/General Counsel will include:

  1. Advising the Executive Team by offering expert legal counsel and strategic support for all company-related matters while ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
  2. Providing leadership on legal issues encompassing corporate law, contracts, intellectual property, civil litigation, dispute resolution, and risk management.
  3. Engaging with internal and external stakeholders on legal matters, ensuring effective communication and transparency.
  4. Formulating and executing legal strategies and processes that align with business objectives while minimizing legal risks and liabilities.
  5. Keeping informed of legislative changes across all jurisdictions where the company operates and proactively developing compliance programs as necessary.
  6. Representing the company in legal proceedings as required, collaborating with external counsel for litigation or other legal matters.
  7. Contributing to corporate strategy and devising programs to achieve organizational goals.
  8. Working closely with Business Leaders to review and negotiate various contracts and agreements, while overseeing legal due diligence to safeguard the company's interests in accordance with legal and industry standards.

Qualifications for Success:

  1. Proven attorney with extensive legal, regulatory, and claims experience in the property/casualty insurance sector, ideally with a minimum of 10 years as a licensed Attorney, including at least 7 years focused on property and casualty insurance law and litigation.
  2. Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and current admission to the State Bar of North Carolina in good standing.
  3. Demonstrated capability to manage intricate legal issues and provide strategic guidance to senior management.
  4. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with strong interpersonal abilities to engage the entire organization in critical business initiatives.
  5. Outstanding organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  6. Preferred experience in intellectual property, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, risk management, and litigation oversight.
  7. Experience interacting with Board members, audit, and investment committees, as well as other senior executives is preferred.
