Position: Senior Systems Engineer - PKI

As a Senior Systems Engineer specializing in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), you will play a pivotal role in the operation and management of Fastly's trusted TLS certification authority. Collaborating with a focused team, including site reliability engineers, you will oversee intricate PKI systems, ensuring they meet stringent security, reliability, and compliance standards. Your work will contribute to the delivery of widely trusted TLS certificates, essential for securing online communications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement and manage a robust, secure, and distributed Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
  • Collaborate with Site Reliability Engineering, network, security, product engineering, and data center teams to maintain secure infrastructure.
  • Integrate both open-source and proprietary software into a modern architecture that prioritizes security, automation, and resilience.
  • Design and refine processes and environments to surpass security, compliance, availability, and maintainability benchmarks.
  • Tackle complex engineering challenges at scale.

Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in systems engineering, with at least 3 years focused on software development.
  • Proficient in implementing and managing distributed systems on Linux, including automated configuration, deployment, and continuous monitoring.
  • Experience in operating and scaling systems built on ephemeral, containerized microservices.
  • Expertise in maintaining secure Linux environments, including system hardening and vulnerability management.
  • Familiarity with applied cryptography and tools such as OpenSSL, CFSSL, or LibreSSL, alongside a solid understanding of PKI architecture and standards.

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with Hardware Security Module (HSM) configuration and management.
  • Knowledge of microservices architecture, particularly using Go and gRPC.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as Docker, Hashicorp Vault, Chef, Splunk, and Terraform.
  • Experience in RDBMS administration in high-availability environments.
  • Background in regulated environments.
  • Experience managing large-scale PKI systems.
