POSITION TITLE: Visual Communications Specialist

LOCATION: Minnesota Historical Society

COMPENSATION: Competitive annual salary

STATUS & HOURS: Full-time, regular position (approximately 2,080 annual hours).

ROLE OVERVIEW: This role is designed to enhance, support, and evolve the visual representation of the Minnesota Historical Society across various media including advertising, printed materials, signage, and digital platforms. The specialist will collaborate within a creative services team to oversee relationships, manage assets, adhere to style guidelines, and ensure quality control.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Lead the design of visual materials (such as digital and print advertisements, brochures, flyers, posters, reports, etc.) in alignment with program goals, brand standards, and budgetary limitations;
  2. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to streamline workflows;
  3. Source and maintain a repository of approved visual assets for multi-platform use;
  4. Ensure quality assurance and provide guidance on visual branding direction;
  5. Act as a proactive change agent, ensuring the Minnesota Historical Society employs the latest and most effective design strategies to market and communicate its services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, along with seven years of experience, or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated design or production experience from concept through to completion;
  • Expertise in layout design and photo editing software (Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects);
  • Experience with layout for extended projects (e.g., annual reports, multi-page booklets);
  • Familiarity with digital file formats and appropriate tools;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, develop budgets, and meet deadlines while upholding creative standards;
  • Proficient in Google Workspace or Microsoft Office tools;
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Exceptional attention to detail and project management capabilities;
  • Ability to perform well under pressure while maintaining high work standards and meeting tight deadlines;
  • Self-motivated and capable of working collaboratively as part of a team.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proven experience in design and desktop publishing across various print formats;
  • Familiarity with diverse design processes and methodologies;
  • Experience in video production and motion graphics;
  • Design experience within an agency or internal marketing department;
  • Knowledge of digital asset management;
  • Understanding of digital encoding and file compression;
  • Experience in copywriting and editing;
  • Familiarity with project management software (Trello, Asana, Teamwork, Smartsheets, Basecamp, etc.).
