Job Description

Job Overview: This role is situated within the Addiction Sciences Division of the Medical University of South Carolina. The Peer Recovery Coach is responsible for delivering non-clinical support aimed at assisting individuals in their journey towards recovery from substance dependence, including alcohol and drugs. The individual will collaborate with the Emergency Department Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (ED MOUD) team to offer peer support to patients pursuing treatment for substance use disorders. The selected candidate will play a key role in screening patients admitted to the Emergency Department for substance misuse issues. Utilizing motivational interviewing techniques, the candidate will evaluate patients' readiness for change and aid them in setting and achieving their recovery goals. The Peer Recovery Coach will facilitate connections to outpatient treatment services and ensure a smooth transition to community providers. Additionally, the Lead Peer Recovery Coach will advocate for the patients and work alongside hospital staff to mitigate stigma associated with addiction. Post-discharge support will also be provided to help patients navigate any barriers to ongoing care.

Required Qualifications: A high school diploma is mandatory, while an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Counseling, or a related field is preferred. The candidate must be actively involved in their own recovery journey, demonstrating a minimum of three years of personal recovery and sustained abstinence from substance use.

Desired Skills: Candidates should have completed the SC course for Certified Peer Support Specialist. Exceptional interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to connect with patients and healthcare professionals. Strong listening, verbal, and written communication skills are required, alongside effective problem-solving abilities. The candidate must be capable of reading and interpreting documents and producing routine reports. Basic computer proficiency is necessary, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills is highly valued.

Key Responsibilities:

20% - Identify and assess hospitalized patients for substance use issues, conducting brief interventions as necessary. Further evaluations will be performed for patients flagged by other hospital staff. The Peer Recovery Coach will gauge patients' readiness for change and utilize motivational interviewing to support their recovery plans. Referrals to social workers and psychiatric teams will be made for additional psychosocial support.

20% - Collaborate with patients and the inpatient team to identify community resources and facilitate successful connections to outpatient treatment. This includes assisting patients and their families in understanding how to access community services and addressing barriers such as transportation or identification issues.

10% - Provide ongoing peer support throughout the hospitalization, helping patients achieve their recovery objectives. This involves sharing recovery resources and modeling effective coping strategies.

10% - Engage in multidisciplinary rounds, offering insights into patient cases and the psychosocial factors affecting care. Close collaboration with case managers and social workers will be essential.

5% - Act as a patient advocate, working with hospital staff to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction and serving as a resource for clinical team members.

10% - Reach out to patients post-discharge to assess any barriers they may face in transitioning to outpatient care, with a goal of contacting them within 48 hours.

10% - Follow up with treatment providers and patients to verify attendance at follow-up appointments and address any missed appointments by assessing barriers.

10% - Attend mandatory staff meetings and complete necessary documentation and reporting on patient outcomes.

5% - Perform additional duties as required.

Additional Information:

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent Work Experience: 2 years. State licensure and/or professional certification requirements may vary based on the position.
