Job Description
Position Overview: This role is situated within the Addiction Sciences Division of the Medical University of South Carolina. The Peer Recovery Coach is responsible for delivering non-clinical support aimed at assisting individuals in their journey towards recovery from substance dependence, particularly concerning alcohol and drugs. The selected candidate will collaborate with the Emergency Department Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (ED MOUD) team to offer peer support to patients pursuing treatment for substance use challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct screenings for patients admitted to the Emergency Department with substance misuse issues, utilizing motivational interviewing techniques to evaluate their readiness for change and to assist them in setting achievable recovery goals.
- Facilitate connections to outpatient treatment services, ensuring a smooth transition and providing necessary resources to overcome barriers such as transportation or identification issues.
- Serve as a supportive presence throughout the patient's hospital stay, offering guidance and resources to help them achieve their recovery objectives.
- Engage in multidisciplinary rounds to contribute insights regarding patient cases and the psychosocial factors affecting their care.
- Act as an advocate for patients, working alongside hospital staff to foster a supportive environment that minimizes the stigma associated with addiction.
- Maintain contact with patients post-discharge to assess their transition to outpatient care and address any challenges they may encounter.
Qualifications:
- A high school diploma is required; an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Counseling, or a related field is preferred.
- Candidates must have a minimum of three years of personal recovery experience and demonstrate sustained abstinence from substance use.
- Completion of the SC course for Certified Peer Support Specialist is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with basic computer proficiency.
