Position Overview:

No prior law enforcement experience or POST certified police academy training is required. If you are a POST certified academy graduate or currently enrolled in a POST certified Academy, please refer to the appropriate application process.

Police Officer Trainees may be eligible for a hiring incentive of up to $10,000, distributed in four equal installments: $2,500 upon acceptance of a final employment offer; $2,500 upon successful completion of the Police Officer Field Training Program; $2,500 upon successful completion of the probationary period; and $2,500 two years post-probation completion.

Job Responsibilities:

This is a trainee-level role that transitions into the Police Officer position. A Police Officer Trainee is a civilian role during enrollment in a Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified police academy, which typically lasts around six months. Upon successful completion of the POST academy and the availability of a Police Officer position, Police Officer Trainees will be sworn in and appointed to the Police Officer classification.

As a Police Officer, responsibilities may include various law enforcement duties such as patrol, traffic management, criminal and juvenile investigations, and radio communication. This role requires operating a patrol vehicle or motorcycle, apprehending and citing law violators, documenting incidents, serving warrants, testifying in court, and providing assistance to the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements:
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the necessary knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License.

Special Qualifications:
  • Must be free of any felony convictions.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States as outlined by federal law.
  • Must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.
  • Vision in each eye, correctable to at least 20/30.
  • Must pass a background investigation and polygraph examination.
  • Must meet all Department medical, physical, and psychological standards.
