Job Overview:
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Student Success Advisor. This position is essential in fostering a supportive environment for students by acting as a key intermediary between the Highlander Success Center and the designated academic college. The Student Success Advisor will report directly to the Assistant Director of Academic Advising.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage a diverse caseload of students, ensuring personalized support and guidance.
  • Participate in college leadership and curriculum committee meetings to address advising challenges and share updates on advising practices and technologies.
  • Supervise at least one advising professional, providing mentorship and support.
  • Resolve intricate issues concerning curriculum, course prerequisites, and student eligibility by consulting the university catalog and relevant resources.
  • Oversee the academic petition process for the assigned college, evaluating requests for exceptions to established policies.
  • Review and enhance advising materials, including brochures and degree progress sheets, to ensure clarity and accuracy.
  • Maintain precise data for reporting purposes, aiding in informed decision-making.
  • Assist in the collection and analysis of data related to student enrollment, persistence, and progression trends.
  • Engage in data collection efforts that support proactive communication with students regarding their academic standing and success.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in developing and executing programs aimed at enhancing student engagement and retention.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to make independent decisions, analyze complex issues, and manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
  • Proficiency in current office software, including Microsoft Office.
  • Experience working collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Advanced degree or extensive experience in education, counseling, or advising.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with university, state, and federal policies and procedures.
  • Experience in academic advising within a higher education context.
  • Knowledge of health and human services programs.
  • Previous experience with advising software and systems.
  • Involvement in training sessions related to academic advising.
  • Skills in data gathering, report preparation, and information analysis.
  • Understanding of student advocacy and retention strategies.
  • Experience in advising programs related to the Sciences.
  • Proven track record of supervising professional staff.
