Job Summary

This position is located in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department in the Navy Region Southwest.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the total golf course maintenance operation, including golf course, greens, driving range, surrounding grounds, and administration duties.
  • Assist the Golf Course Superintendent with golf course management, including playing surface of the course, all tees, fairways, roughs, greens, and surrounding areas.
  • Manage area responsibilities, including entrance roads, parking lots, practice putting greens, and driving ranges.
  • Oversee landscaping, including planning, planting, and removal.
  • Manage structures, including buildings, fences, bridges, and shelters.
  • Ensure proper functioning of an irrigation system.
  • Maintain an adequate level of supplies and materials.
  • Oversee the vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance program.
  • Maintain accurate records of inventory and equipment repairs.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance schedules are met.
  • Recommend purchase, survey, repair, and/or modification of equipment to the Golf Course Superintendent for approval.
  • Review work assignments and determine work priorities.
  • Check work in progress and finished work for compliance with sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.
  • Ensure proper staffing levels.
  • Answer questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.
  • Keep the supervisor informed on status and progress of work, causes of delays, overall work operations, and problems that require corrective action.
  • Assist with the training, supervising, and scheduling of employees.
  • Interview and prepare necessary personnel action requests for hiring.
  • Evaluate employee performance and recommend awards or disciplinary action to the Superintendent.
  • Assist in the preparation of budget criteria for golf course maintenance.
  • Ensure financial integrity is maintained for the operation and required reports and records are properly maintained.
  • Assist in conducting periodic inventory of supplies and equipment as required.
Requirements
  • Four years of experience related to golf course maintenance.
  • Knowledge of golf course maintenance principles and practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of the game of golf.
  • Knowledge of the available types and varieties of turf grass.
  • Knowledge of the complexities and interrelationships of soils, fertilizers, irrigation, drainage, insects, insecticides, turf diseases, fungicides, weeds, herbicides, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to plan, assign, train, and supervise personnel.
  • Knowledge of proper application of pesticides.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and/or financial management.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
