The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is responsible for the ownership, operation, and maintenance of various major transportation facilities across the State of Maryland. Nature of Work: The Environmental Compliance Specialist is tasked with managing environmental initiatives and coordinating compliance functions throughout the organization. This role oversees projects related to air and water quality compliance, storage tank management, spill prevention, hazardous waste management, and environmental audits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in conducting field assessments and routine inspections of fuel storage systems and waste management practices.
  • Act as an environmental representative on the facility's Environmental & Safety Committees, participating in meetings and related actions.
  • Conduct regular environmental inspections of facilities and provide guidance on necessary corrective actions.
  • Assist in the implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS) and manage the associated web-based database.
  • Provide safety and environmental training as required.
  • Review and provide feedback on various environmental policies, proposals, and work plans to address environmental liabilities.
  • Coordinate environmental service projects, including waste disposal and recycling, while adhering to procurement requirements.

Employees in this position will report directly to the Environmental Manager within the Office of Environment, Safety, and Risk Management. Hybrid telework schedules may be available for this role.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in natural sciences, environmental science, civil engineering, or related fields.

Experience: A minimum of six (6) years of experience in environmental analysis or management, including two (2) years of experience related to hazardous waste management.
