POSITION SUMMARY

TITLE: LPN, Special Education Nurse

STATUS/FLSA: Full-time / Non-Exempt

PAY SCHEDULE/GROUP: NURSING SERVICES

DIRECT REPORTS: Full-time: (1); Part-time (1)

SUPERVISOR: Principal

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 190 Days. Salary determined by schedule set by the Board.

EVALUATION: Performance evaluated by the classroom teacher and Principal.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

The objective of this role is to support the District in maximizing educational opportunities for each student with special needs. This position is responsible for delivering nursing and related services to students with special requirements, acting as a resource for families, and ensuring a safe and hygienic environment to promote the health and welfare of special education students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide assistance with feeding, changing, and hygiene for students with special needs.
  • Comply with and enforce district, state, and federal health and special education regulations.
  • Process Medicaid claims for billable services rendered to eligible students.
  • Administer prescribed medications to students in accordance with medical directives.
  • Assist in the mobility and activity of students through transportation and lifting.
  • Conduct daily monitoring of each student for physical and emotional changes; maintain and document individual health records.
  • Provide First Aid care and comfort to ill or injured students as per established policies and procedures.
  • Support school nurses with training and documentation updates as required.
  • Participate in staff development programs, including First Aid, CPR, and AED training.
  • Address health needs of special education students during field trips and other events, including potential overnight trips.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Job Duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Assist in positioning students in specialized equipment as directed by the Physical Therapist.
  • Support stretching and positional changes for students.
  • Collaborate with teachers on classroom responsibilities.
  • Act as a substitute for the regular school nurse, providing necessary support in their absence.
  • Communicate with families, staff, and healthcare providers to ensure students' health needs are met and maintain accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Proficient knowledge of medications and their proper administration.
  • Experience with tube feeding techniques.
  • Ability to lift and transfer students safely.
  • Familiarity with Medicaid processes and billing.
  • Understanding of the medical history of each student in this role.
  • Capability to respond effectively in emergencies involving students or staff.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to operate classroom equipment, including lifts and specialized chairs.
  • Knowledge of emergency protocols within the classroom and school.
  • Awareness of the DHEC Exclusion List.
  • Understanding of school policies and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Utilize computers for word processing and specialized applications, as well as operate large equipment or machinery.

EDUCATION:

Completion of an Associate's degree. Education may be substituted for experience.

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.

CERTIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED: This position necessitates a valid SC Nurse license, along with CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.

PREFERRED: None.

Indoor and outdoor environments, exposure to noise, moisture and/or humidity, potential for violence or physical altercations; risk of injury from transferring and lifting students; exposure to bodily fluids.
