DIRECT REPORTS: Full-time: (1); Part-time (1)
SUPERVISOR: Principal
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 190 Days. Salary determined by schedule set by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance evaluated by the classroom teacher and Principal.
GENERAL OVERVIEW
The primary objective of this role is to support the District in delivering optimal educational experiences for each student with special needs. This position is accountable for providing nursing and associated program services to students requiring special assistance, acting as a liaison for parents, and ensuring a secure and hygienic environment to promote the health and welfare of special education students.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver feeding, changing, and hygiene services to students with special needs.
- Comply with and enforce district, state, and federal health and special education guidelines.
- Process Medicaid claims for eligible services rendered to students.
- Administer prescribed medications to students in accordance with medical directives.
- Assist in the transportation and mobility of students to facilitate their engagement in activities.
- Conduct daily monitoring of each student for physical and psychological changes; maintain and update individual health records.
- Provide First Aid assistance and comfort to ill or injured students following established protocols.
- Support school nurses with training and documentation updates as required.
- Participate in professional development sessions such as First Aid, CPR, and AED training.
- Address health needs of special education students during field trips and extracurricular activities.
Essential Job Duties are intended to be examples of responsibilities and are not exhaustive. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assist in positioning students in therapeutic equipment as directed by the Physical Therapist.
- Support stretching and repositioning activities.
- Collaborate with teachers on various classroom responsibilities.
- Act as a substitute for the regular school nurse, providing necessary support in their absence.
- Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and healthcare providers to ensure the health needs of students are met and maintain accurate records.
- Proficient knowledge of medications and the ability to administer them correctly.
- Understanding of tube feeding procedures.
- Capability to lift and transfer students safely.
- Familiarity with Medicaid processes and billing.
- Awareness of the medical histories of students in this role.
- Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Basic computer literacy.
- Ability to operate classroom equipment, including lifts and specialized chairs.
- Knowledge of emergency protocols within the classroom and school.
- Familiarity with the DHEC Exclusion List.
- Understanding of school policies and procedures.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
Utilize computers for documentation and operate specialized equipment as necessary.
EDUCATION:
Completion of an Associate's degree. Relevant experience may substitute for educational requirements.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 3 years in a related field.
CERTIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED: Valid SC Nurse license. CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
PREFERRED: None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
ACTIVITIES: Standing, walking, and sitting for varying durations; minimal gripping or reaching; frequent communication.
LIFTING: Capable of lifting up to 25 lbs; occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
VISION REQUIREMENTS:
No specific vision requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Indoor and outdoor environments, exposure to noise, moisture, and potential hazards associated with lifting and transferring students.
