Position Overview:
JMT's Washington, D.C.

office is seeking a Hydraulic Engineering Specialist to oversee roadway drainage engineering design. This role requires applying general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate assignments with minimal supervision.

This position serves as a technical mentor to junior engineers. U.S. Residency Required.

Compensation ranges from $40-60/hour, based on experience, education, and certifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of engineering work within a major project or across a moderately scoped project.
  • Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, and other topographical or geological data to plan projects.
  • Perform calculations for roadway drainage design.
  • Design projects according to client specifications and guidelines, utilizing design software and drawing tools.
  • Develop construction cost estimates.
  • Assist in preparing engineering documents for advertisement and construction.
  • Compile contract plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Manage project sub-consultants and in-house support disciplines.
  • Develop extra work order requests and open-end contract task proposals.
  • Participate in meetings with clients.
  • Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality standards.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Proficient in Bentley OpenRoads Designer and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Strong written and communication skills.
  • Preferred proficiency in hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and design software.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited engineering program.
  • 4-10 years of experience in Water Resources or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience in hydrologic modeling using TR55 / TR20 and Rational Method.
  • Experience in storm drain design, stormwater management design, and erosion and sediment control design.

Preferred Experience:

  • Professional Engineer License.
  • Experience in water resource engineering design in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia.
  • Proficiency in discipline-specific design software, including TR-55, TR-20, HY-8, FlowMaster, and/or HEC-RAS.

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily conducted in a general office environment (95% of the time). The role is generally sedentary but may require occasional standing and walking. The office environment is adequately lit and temperature-controlled, with no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Fieldwork may be required occasionally, where work may be conducted outdoors in varying weather conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be necessary as needed.
