Position Overview

The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is an 18-bed transitional unit from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) focusing on trauma, urgent dialysis, cardiac care, stroke management, and ventilator support. The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:3 to 1:4.

Our facility is a 315-bed, Level II trauma center that offers a wide range of services typically found in urban hospitals, including trauma care, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, obstetrics, and psychiatry, while fostering strong relationships within the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Registered Nurse evaluates patient needs and develops, implements, and assesses nursing care for individuals or families under their supervision.
  • Provides leadership within a professional healthcare environment.
  • Collaborates with team members to enhance team performance through mentorship and support.
  • Assigns tasks based on patient needs and the skill levels of RNs, LPNs, or support staff, including managing staff schedules.
  • Ensures a safe environment by considering patient conditions, the complexity of interventions, and the predictability of outcomes.
  • Offers constructive feedback to peers regarding clinical practices and performance.
  • Shares expertise and skills with colleagues to foster a culture of learning.
  • Embraces accountability for mistakes, encouraging a culture where calculated risks are supported.
  • Engages in interdisciplinary teams to assess clinical care and health services.
  • Advocates for patient safety initiatives, such as the National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives specific to the department.
  • Supervises and evaluates the scope of practice for assigned LPNs as appropriate.
  • Utilizes the nursing process to create individualized care plans in accordance with physician orders and hospital policies.
  • Develops culturally and age-appropriate expected outcomes in collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Analyzes patient health status and identifies care needs based on established norms.
  • Monitors changes in patient conditions and communicates effectively with physicians and supervisors.
  • Accepts assignments in various areas beyond the primary unit as needed.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to ongoing professional development and education.
  • Participates in professional organizations to promote the advancement of nursing.
  • Engages in peer review and seeks feedback to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Adheres to attendance policies as outlined by the hospital.
  • Continuously assesses patient and family satisfaction.
  • Promotes effective communication that centers on patients and their families.
  • Addresses and attempts to resolve patient and family concerns.
  • Employs effective time management skills to fulfill responsibilities within the designated work shift.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Current State of PA RN licensure or multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • CPR certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in a relevant specialty area
