Overview

The mission of the DelDOT Division of Watershed Stewardship is to sustain and enhance Delaware's navigable waterways, including its bays and canals. The Shoreline and Waterway Management Section is responsible for a variety of waterway management activities across the state.

Position Summary

The Shoreline and Waterway Management Section is engaged in numerous activities aimed at preserving and enhancing the recreational use of the state's waters. Responsibilities include dredging and marking navigation channels, as well as removing nuisance macroalgae and navigation hazards. This role will also involve participation in shoreline restoration initiatives, storm cleanup operations, public outreach activities, and large marine debris removal efforts. Basic maintenance tasks for marine watercraft will also be part of the job, which will require working on boats and in aquatic environments.

Key Responsibilities

The following functions are essential and represent core responsibilities common to all positions within this classification. This list is not exhaustive, and incumbents may perform similar duties not specifically mentioned here. Implements conservation and preservation strategies to support the management of the state's natural resources, which includes activities such as propagating, seeding, transplanting, cultivating, harvesting, and caring for trees, flowers, shrubs, lawns, and crops, along with turf management, pest control, herbicide and fertilizer application, layout and design, and assessment of soil composition and environmental conditions. Conducts maintenance and repairs across various labor and trade disciplines, including plumbing, carpentry, painting, welding, construction, and grounds maintenance, while assisting senior personnel on larger projects. Operates marine, land-based, and construction machinery and vehicles. Maintains and repairs a diverse range of equipment and vehicles. Provides information to the public upon request and responds to inquiries regarding agency initiatives and programs. Ensures the safe use of state-owned, managed, and maintained grounds and facilities by the public. Completes standard forms and applications; maintains records and reports detailing daily activities, tool and equipment inventories, fuel and service logs, and related tasks.

Qualifications

Requirements for Environmental Conservation Technician

Candidates must demonstrate education, training, and/or experience in the following areas:

Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control: Coastal Program:

Proficiency in operating and maintaining motor vehicles, landscaping, and groundskeeping equipment and hand tools. Experience in operating and maintaining small motor marine vessels, canoes, and kayaks. Familiarity with performing various groundskeeping, mechanical, and building maintenance tasks. Knowledge of land stewardship, plant life, pest or disease control, and invasive species identification and management. Valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked, or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
