Introduction

The mission of the DNREC Division of Watershed Stewardship is to enhance and sustain Delaware's navigable waterways, including its bays and canals. The Shoreline and Waterway Management Section is responsible for a variety of activities across the state.

Summary Statement

The Shoreline and Waterway Management Section supervises numerous waterway management tasks statewide. These tasks encompass dredging and marking navigation channels maintained by the state, as well as the removal of nuisance macroalgae and navigation obstacles to safeguard, sustain, and improve recreational access to the state's waters. This role will also contribute to shoreline restoration initiatives, storm cleanup operations, public engagement activities, and large marine debris removal efforts. Additionally, the position entails performing basic maintenance tasks on marine watercraft and involves working on boats and in aquatic environments.

Key Responsibilities

Implements conservation and preservation strategies to support the management of the state's natural resources, which includes activities such as propagating, seeding, transplanting, cultivating, harvesting, and caring for trees, flowers, shrubs, lawns, and crops, including turf/grounds management, pest control, herbicide/fertilizer application, layout and design, and assessing soil composition and environmental conditions. Conducts maintenance and repairs across various labor/trade disciplines, including plumbing, carpentry, painting, welding, construction, and grounds upkeep, while assisting senior personnel on larger projects. Operates marine, land-based, and construction machinery and vehicles. Maintains and repairs a variety of equipment and vehicles. Provides information to the public as needed or responds to inquiries regarding agency initiatives and programs. Ensures the safe use of state-owned, managed, and/or maintained grounds and facilities by the public. Completes standard forms and applications; maintains records and reports detailing daily activities, tool and equipment inventories, fuel and service logs, and related tasks.

Requirements for Environmental Conservation Technician

Applicants must possess education, training, and/or experience demonstrating proficiency in each of the following areas:

Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control: Coastal Program:

Knowledge of operating and maintaining motor vehicles, landscaping, and groundskeeping equipment and hand tools. Knowledge of operating and maintaining small motor marine vessels, canoes, and kayaks. Knowledge of performing a variety of groundskeeping, mechanical, and building maintenance trades work. Knowledge of land stewardship, plant life, pest or disease control, and invasive species identification and management. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked, or canceled, or disqualified from driving).
