Position Overview

The Air Force Research Laboratory's Turbine Engine Division is in search of a highly skilled individual to engage in experimental research and development focused on innovative diagnostic techniques applicable to turbine engines and their associated technologies.

The selected candidate will collaborate with senior researchers and team members, undertaking the following responsibilities:

  1. Execute research and development initiatives in turbine hot section experimental validation and diagnostic methodologies, concentrating on the analysis of unsteady, rotating flow fields and heat transfer phenomena.
  2. Assist in the management of the Heat Flux Instrumentation Laboratory by:

    a) Setting up, operating, and maintaining existing infrared thermal imaging calibration apparatus for both internal experiments and turbine engine evaluations.

    b) Operating and maintaining thin film sputter deposition equipment, leading the production of thin film heat flux sensors for transient temperature measurements.

    c) Overseeing the upkeep of experimental apparatus and enhancing laboratory equipment and software as necessary.
  3. Conduct research aimed at advancing cutting-edge thermal imaging techniques suitable for harsh environments, with the goal of gathering data to refine turbomachinery design, functionality, and maintenance practices.
  4. Utilize and develop data analysis tools to manage, interpret, and scrutinize extensive data sets, fostering insights that will facilitate technological advancements in alignment with the Air Force's objectives.
  5. Support the execution and success of Department of Defense programs in collaboration with U.S. Government, industrial, and academic partners.

Qualified candidates may have the opportunity for targeted technical training funded by the organization.

Telework Options

This position is eligible for situational telework, as determined by agency policy.

Remote Work Policy

This position does not permit remote work outside the continental United States.

Essential Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a SECRET level security clearance is necessary. Selected candidates will undergo a government security investigation and must meet all criteria for access to classified information.
  • A Master's degree in a relevant technical field (such as Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Applied Physics) is required, or a Bachelor's degree in a related discipline accompanied by a minimum of 5 years of pertinent work experience. Degrees must be conferred by an ABET-accredited institution or one recognized by ABET through international agreements.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • A keen interest in hands-on experimental research and development is expected.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within an integrated team on complex multidisciplinary challenges is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the design and application of infrared imaging, infrared spectroscopy, multispectral techniques, and optical data acquisition systems.
  • Familiarity with experimental data acquisition, processing, and analysis, particularly in the development and application of image-processing tools.
  • Knowledge of turbine engine technologies, including turbomachinery flows, compressible flow physics, heat transfer, and related experimental and computational tools.
  • Proficiency with digital tools such as MatLab/Python, commercial CAD/CAM software, and LabView or similar applications.
  • Experience with optical design software (e.g., Zemax or equivalent) is highly desirable.
