Position Overview

The Electrical Engineer for Rotating Systems plays a pivotal role in our organization. This dynamic position demands high energy, exceptional multitasking abilities, and outstanding communication skills across various business functions. The selected candidate will be accountable for the responsibilities outlined below.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Act as an internal consultant to the actuation product design engineering team, participating in product development reviews alongside engineering, program teams, and clients.
  2. Oversee each application throughout the entire product life cycle, including proposal, design, development, verification, and ongoing support.
  3. Occasionally lead a design team, ensuring that all designs align with program cost, schedule, and technical performance objectives.
  4. Develop tailored design workflow processes for rotating components, ensuring adherence to these processes to mitigate risks and guarantee success.

Specific Duties

  1. Provide Electrical Engineering (EE) insights for conceptual trade studies and proposal initiatives.
  2. Generate detailed layouts in 2D and/or 3D for new applications.
  3. Conduct comprehensive calculations covering all product aspects, including electromagnetics, magnetic analysis, mathematical modeling, motor and system performance, frequency response, sensor analysis, dynamic stiffness, backlash, lifespan, temperature, and thermal capacity studies using tools like Excel, MATLAB Simulink, Speed, and other analytical software.
  4. Prepare Reliability Studies, Fault Trees, FMECA's, System Safety Assessments, and Hazard Evaluations.
  5. In a project lead role, define the scope of work and supervise the efforts of Designers and Drafters assigned to the project, encompassing Drafting, Materials Engineering, Stress Analysis, Dynamic Analysis, and more.
  6. Define requirements and manage offsite control providers for both card and box-level controllers, including software and hardware, adhering to DO-178 and DO-254 processes up to level A.
  7. Review and approve detailed component drawings.
  8. Offer EE technical support to manufacturing, suppliers, or clients.
  9. Design and support electrical test equipment tailored for each product application.
  10. Engage hands-on in the workshop environment to construct prototypes and assist with production challenges.
  11. Foster a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
  12. Comply with departmental procedures and standards to achieve optimal quality and efficiency.
  13. Participate in special projects and perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  2. Extensive knowledge in various project types, including:
  3. High power density Motors and Generators
  4. Brush and Brushless DC Motors and Systems
  5. AC Induction Motors
  6. Stepper Motors
  7. Torque Motors (Pancake form factor) Generator/Alternators
  8. Ancillary Devices
  9. E/M Failsafe Friction and Tooth Brakes
  10. Hysteresis Brakes
  11. Detent Brakes
  12. Eddy Current Dampers
  13. Hysteresis and E/M Clutches
  14. Position Sensors (HED, Resolvers, Encoders, Field Directors, etc.)
  15. Velocity Sensing Devices (BLDC Tach's, etc.)
  16. Load Sensing Devices (Force and Torque)
  17. Fundamental understanding of control system design, including:
  18. Open and closed loop systems
  19. High frequency response servo applications
  20. Relays and switches
  21. Analog and digital control systems (including redundant systems, fault monitoring, diagnostics)
  22. Proficiency in DO178 and DO254.
  23. 15+ years of relevant experience.
  24. 10+ years in the aerospace sector.
  25. Demonstrated leadership capabilities through mentoring and managing multifaceted design teams.
  26. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  27. Strong analytical and mathematical foundation.
  28. Knowledge of motor theory, thermal analysis, magnetics, and electromagnetics, along with the effects of vibration and temperature.
  29. Familiarity with certification testing per DO-160 or MIL-STD-810.
  30. Understanding of Aerospace, Military, and Commercial FAA design requirements.
  31. Knowledge of Aerospace material selection methods.
  32. Awareness of manufacturing processes for electrical components.
  33. Familiarity with aerospace design and drafting standards.
  34. Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) (ANSI Y14.5M).
  35. Proficiency in software tools such as:
  36. SolidWorks
  37. MATLAB Simulink
  38. Speed
  39. Ansys
  40. SolidWorks Simulation
  41. LabVIEW
  42. Relex (Windchill)
  43. Microsoft Products, particularly advanced Excel & PowerPoint skills.
  44. U.S. Citizenship, with no dual citizenship permitted.
  45. Ability to obtain a government security clearance, if necessary.

Desired Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of aerospace software development.
  2. Understanding of electronic circuit design and PWB layout.
  3. Familiarity with Aerospace Configuration Management.
  4. Knowledge of DFMA principles is highly desirable.
  5. Experience with design principles utilizing additive manufacturing is a plus.
  6. Familiarity with SolidWorks Enterprise PDM is advantageous.
  7. Experience with harsh environments, such as space, is a plus.
  8. Knowledge of land and sea-based systems is beneficial.
  9. Basic understanding of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
