General Overview

The Senior Fleet Technician is responsible for executing advanced technical tasks related to the maintenance and operation of the municipal vehicle and equipment fleet.

This role includes conducting safety and emissions assessments, performing routine and corrective maintenance, and providing mentorship to junior staff on proper equipment handling, diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance protocols.


Work is conducted with minimal oversight, allowing for a degree of independence in decision-making.

The position relies on substantial experience and discretion to determine the most effective methods by interpreting relevant policies and procedures.

Reports to the Fleet Senior Mechanic or designated supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

Provides direction and oversight to fleet mechanics on specific repairs or maintenance tasks; reviews ongoing and completed work to ensure compliance with established standards and specifications.


Identifies challenges and areas for improvement regarding work performed and offers solutions to junior staff; supervises the fleet facility/shop to ensure a safe working environment by enforcing safety regulations; trains and/or ensures the training of new and junior personnel.


Conducts specialized mechanical work including welding, body repair, and painting; designs, modifies, and installs hydraulic systems and other specialized equipment.


Manages a preventive maintenance schedule for emergency vehicles and apparatus; performs maintenance and repairs on the city's emergency fleet.


Repairs a diverse range of vehicles and equipment, addressing their integrated mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and computerized systems.

Diagnoses malfunctions using diagnostic tools and troubleshooting equipment; performs minor bodywork as needed to ensure proper functionality.


Repairs, replaces, and adjusts components such as brakes, steering systems, pumps, hydraulic rams, and all other automotive systems; tunes engines and aligns wheels.

Rebuilds engines, transmissions, and related components; conducts tests on rebuilt units to ensure proper operation.

Analyzes and diagnoses issues in electronic and computerized fuel and ignition systems.

Adjusts and repairs vehicles, including multi-wheel drive systems, and installs or repairs air-conditioning systems.

Performs routine maintenance on all city vehicles and equipment, including heavy machinery; coordinates repair schedules with operators.
Responds to field locations to provide emergency road service for city vehicles and equipment.


Inspects emergency generators according to a routine schedule and as needed; performs repairs and routine servicing; ensures adequate fuel supply for emergency generators.

Utilizes the city's computerized fleet management system to document labor, materials, and equipment used in repairs.

Cleans and maintains vehicles and contributes to the upkeep of a well-organized Fleet Services facility.

Adheres to all city and public health and safety guidelines; performs job functions safely and reports hazards according to established protocols.


Maintains effective communication and relationships with all city employees, external representatives, and the public to foster goodwill and project a positive city image.


Maintains on-call availability as assigned to prepare for, respond to, or recover from emergencies, ensuring the city remains operational during such events; duties may vary based on the city's needs during emergencies.


Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all individuals encountered during work, regardless of diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications


A high school diploma or GED is required; supplemented by four (4) years of experience as an automotive or heavy equipment journeyman mechanic, including one (1) year in a lead worker capacity; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.



Required Certifications and Licenses


Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver license and the ability to operate a city-owned vehicle according to established policies and safety guidelines; within six months of hire, must acquire a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL).

National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required (and sponsored) based on job duties.

Must possess or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire, certification in three (3) areas of the automotive or medium/heavy truck series by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE), and designation as an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT).



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

NIASE Certification in at least one area is preferred.
