Position Overview

SUMMARY OF ROLE

The Youth Engagement Specialist is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, enjoyable, and supportive environment for young members, aligning with the mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kalamazoo, Inc. This role involves imparting Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills, delivering exceptional youth development programs, nurturing positive relationships, and orchestrating engaging activities while ensuring a safe and encouraging atmosphere.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create a welcoming atmosphere that provides youth with an energetic and enjoyable experience, embedding a culture of fun in all activities.
  • Design and implement a diverse range of age-appropriate High-Yield Activities that promote social emotional and educational skill development, including special programs and events.
  • Collaborate with Unit goals focused on youth development quality and SEL by evaluating members' social-emotional behaviors and offering targeted activities.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of Club activities, programs, and effective youth development methodologies.
  • Be proficient in all Unit roles to provide support as needed and assist in training new staff members.
  • Work in partnership with program coordinators to deliver high-quality, targeted programming.
  • Ensure a healthy and productive environment that fosters positive interactions among peers and adults, prioritizing physical and emotional safety.
  • Establish clear expectations and model desired behaviors for youth.
  • Uphold the Club's Managing Member Behavior Policy, incorporating Positive Behavior Support, Anti-Bullying, and Trauma-Informed Care strategies.
  • Manage membership documentation and track attendance using the MyClubHub database.
  • Engage in National Youth Outcome Initiatives (NYOI) and Weikart methods, participating in the Youth Program Quality Intervention (YPQI) and Assessment (YPQA) processes to enhance program practices.
  • Ensure the organization and cleanliness of the Club facilities, completing necessary checklists and maintaining inventory of materials.
  • Assist the Unit Manager in distributing information to members, ensuring equitable access to updates regarding events and programs.
  • Develop and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as training resources for this role.
  • Adhere to mandated reporting policies.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Support the planning and execution of Club-wide events, including fundraisers and outreach initiatives.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Wear the designated Boys & Girls Club staff uniform during work hours and maintain a professional appearance suitable for engaging with youth.
  • Familiarize oneself with the Boys & Girls Club Safety Policies and Crisis Management Plan, responding to emergencies as outlined.
  • Exhibit professional conduct in accordance with the Boys & Girls Club Personnel Policy and Standards of Conduct.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience in a youth development organization, particularly with diverse populations.
  • Proven ability to create and implement engaging educational and recreational activities.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Proficient in interacting with members, addressing behavioral issues in a constructive and age-appropriate manner.
  • Passionate about working with youth and fostering engagement.
  • Experience in facilitating small group activities for various age groups, capable of planning diverse programs that are creative and engaging.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to ongoing training and professional development.
  • Demonstrated teamwork abilities and a commitment to promoting a collaborative culture.
  • Experience working with youth, parents/guardians, and staff.
  • Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish, are advantageous.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Occasionally lift and transport objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
