Position Overview

ROLE SUMMARY

The Youth Engagement Specialist is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, enjoyable, and supportive atmosphere for members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kalamazoo (BGC). This role involves imparting Social Emotional Learning skills, delivering exceptional youth development, nurturing positive relationships, and orchestrating engaging activities while ensuring a safe and inclusive environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create a welcoming environment that promotes fun and high-energy interactions with youth, establishing a culture of enjoyment in all activities.
  • Design and lead a diverse range of age-appropriate activities that enhance social emotional and educational skills, including special programs and events.
  • Collaborate with team members to achieve unit objectives related to youth development quality and Social Emotional Learning (SEL), utilizing tools to assess and address members' social-emotional needs.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of Club programs and youth development methodologies.
  • Be prepared to support various roles within the unit and assist in training new staff members.
  • Work in conjunction with program leaders to ensure the delivery of high-quality, targeted initiatives.
  • Foster a healthy and productive atmosphere that encourages positive relationships among peers and adults, ensuring physical and emotional safety.
  • Set clear expectations for youth behavior and model desired conduct.
  • Implement the Club's Member Behavior Policy, which encompasses Positive Behavior Support, Anti-Bullying strategies, and Trauma-Informed Care practices.
  • Manage membership documentation and track attendance through the designated database.
  • Engage in National Youth Outcome Initiatives (NYOI) and participate in program quality assessments to enhance overall practices.
  • Ensure the Club space is organized and clean, completing necessary checklists and maintaining inventory of materials.
  • Assist in the dissemination of information to members regarding events and programs, ensuring equitable access to all communications.
  • Develop and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to guide responsibilities associated with this role.
  • Adhere to mandated reporting requirements.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Support the planning and execution of Club-wide events, including fundraisers and outreach initiatives.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Maintain a professional appearance by wearing the designated staff uniform during work hours.
  • Familiarize oneself with the Club's Safety Policies and Crisis Management Plan, responding appropriately to emergencies.
  • Exhibit professional conduct in accordance with the Club's Personnel Policy and Standards of Conduct.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a youth development setting, particularly with diverse populations.
  • Proven ability to create and implement engaging educational and recreational activities.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with members and address behavioral issues in a constructive manner.
  • Passionate about working with youth and fostering their development.
  • Experience in facilitating group activities for various age groups, ensuring they are creative and engaging.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and training.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Experience in building relationships with youth, parents, and colleagues.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is advantageous.
