Position Overview

This role is situated within the Parks and Recreation sector.

All roles are part-time and may be designated as either Lifeguard or Lifeguard/Instructor, contingent upon qualifications.

Applicants who are not certified will need to demonstrate their water proficiency as a prerequisite for the lifeguarding training. Candidates may be required to complete a swimming skills assessment during the interview. A successful completion of a pre-course swimming skills evaluation is mandatory prior to enrolling in lifeguarding courses.

The swimming skills assessment includes:
  • 300-yard swim utilizing front crawl or breaststroke
  • Two-minute treading using legs only
  • Retrieving a 10-lb dive weight from a depth of 7 ft, surfacing and swimming 20 yards with the weight using legs only, and exiting the pool without the aid of a ladder within 100 seconds
Multiple openings are available at various aquatic facilities.

Key Responsibilities

Ensures adherence to all relevant codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures: maintains compliance with established safety protocols; supervises the environment and utilization of safety equipment to ensure the safety of patrons and staff.

Monitors and supervises swimmer activities: observes the water; enforces facility rules; maintains order; takes proactive safety measures; rescues individuals in distress; administers emergency first aid and CPR; and executes other life-saving actions as necessary.

Conducts swimming lessons: develops lesson plans; registers participants; tracks attendance; instructs and demonstrates various skills, including floating, kicking, stroke techniques, and water safety; evaluates participants; provides recommendations for future classes and skill enhancement; and ensures participant safety during sessions.

Leads water exercise classes: designs lesson plans and fitness routines; registers participants; tracks attendance; instructs and demonstrates various exercises; and ensures participant safety during classes.

Maintains the aquatic facility: assists with the opening of the facility; cleans restrooms, locker rooms, walkways, pool deck, and pool furniture; stocks supplies; and maintains necessary documentation.

Provides customer service: offers information and addresses inquiries regarding facility policies, procedures, programs, fees, and other concerns; responds to questions and complaints; and initiates problem resolution.

Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Must be at least 16 years old. Ability to pass a water skills assessment is required. A High School Diploma or GED, along with one year of lifeguarding experience, is preferred.
Certifications

The following nationally recognized certifications are preferred: Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid.

Physical Requirements

This position necessitates moderate physical exertion, which may involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, prolonged standing, and lifting or carrying objects of moderate weight.

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and differentiate colors or shades, as well as visual cues or signals. Effective oral communication is also necessary.

Environmental Considerations

Performance of essential functions may involve exposure to various environmental conditions, including dirt, dust, humidity, and potential hazards associated with aquatic environments.
