Compensation: $55,000 - $65,000 annually
Key ResponsibilitiesCase Management:
- Oversee family law cases from initiation to conclusion, encompassing divorce, child custody, support, alimony, and adoption.
- Organize and maintain client files, ensuring all documentation is current and accessible.
- Monitor critical deadlines, court dates, and significant milestones throughout case progress.
Document Preparation:
- Draft and prepare legal documents, including pleadings, motions, affidavits, subpoenas, and discovery responses.
- Assist in formulating marital settlement agreements, parenting plans, and other family law contracts.
- Compile and organize trial exhibits and documents for hearings and trials.
Client Interaction:
- Act as a primary contact for clients, providing updates on case developments and addressing inquiries.
- Coordinate and schedule client meetings, consultations, and depositions.
- Help gather and organize client information and documentation.
Legal Research:
- Conduct research on family law matters, including relevant state and federal regulations and case law.
- Prepare legal memoranda and summaries based on research findings to assist attorneys.
Court Filings:
- File legal documents with appropriate courts, ensuring adherence to local rules and procedures.
- Track and follow up on filed documents to ensure timely actions are taken.
Discovery Process:
- Support the discovery process by drafting requests, responding to inquiries, and managing document production.
- Organize and analyze discovery materials, including financial records and other pertinent documents.
Mediation and Settlement Support:
- Prepare for mediation sessions, including necessary documentation and exhibits.
- Assist attorneys in settlement discussions by preparing proposals and organizing relevant information.
Trial Preparation:
- Support attorneys in trial preparation, including witness readiness, exhibit organization, and trial binder creation.
- Attend trials and hearings as necessary, providing assistance to attorneys and clients.
Administrative Duties:
- Track billable hours and prepare time entries for client invoicing.
- Assist with administrative tasks, including appointment scheduling and correspondence management.
Confidentiality and Ethics:
- Uphold client confidentiality and manage sensitive information with care.
- Comply with all ethical standards and guidelines within the legal profession.
Educational Background:
- Associate's degree or certificate in paralegal studies from an ABA-accredited program (Bachelor's degree preferred).
- Relevant coursework or certification in family law is advantageous.
Experience:
- 2-3 years of paralegal experience, with a strong preference for family law expertise.
- Demonstrated experience managing cases in divorce, child custody, support, and alimony.
Technical Skills:
- Proficient in legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis) and case management software.
- Strong command of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with e-filing systems and court protocols.
Legal Knowledge:
- Comprehensive understanding of family law statutes, regulations, and court procedures.
- Strong grasp of legal terminology and principles in family law.
Organizational Skills:
- Exceptional organizational abilities, capable of managing multiple cases and deadlines concurrently.
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in document preparation and case oversight.
Communication Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of interacting professionally with clients, attorneys, and court personnel.
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to handle sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.
Analytical Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, capable of reviewing and interpreting complex legal documents.
- Ability to conduct thorough legal research and provide clear, concise summaries.
Time Management:
- Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines.
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ethical Standards:
- Commitment to high ethical standards, including confidentiality and integrity in handling sensitive client information.
- Understanding of the ethical responsibilities of a paralegal in family law.
Certifications (Optional but Preferred):
- Preferred paralegal certification (CP, CLA, or RP).
- State-specific paralegal certification or licensing if applicable.
