Position Overview: The role of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is essential in delivering practical nursing care tailored to the Health Care Plan established for students with unique needs. This position focuses on supporting the health and emotional well-being of students, ensuring that their health-related tasks are documented and maintained effectively. The LPN's responsibilities may extend across various environments, including classrooms and community settings.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers specialized treatments and medications, including first aid, to ensure appropriate care for students with special needs.
  • Maintains accurate records related to medical care and the Health Care Plan for students.
  • Plans and implements health-related activities tailored for students with special needs.
  • Communicates effectively with certificated staff and the school nurse regarding the health and medical requirements of students.
  • Collaborates with the school nurse, classroom teacher, and building principal to address health care needs or concerns with parents.
  • Assists certificated staff and therapists in providing activities that support academic, self-help, social, motor, or life skills for students.
  • Demonstrates adaptability in meeting the health care needs of students within the educational environment.
  • Travels within the district to support programs at different locations as needed.

Additional Duties:

  • Performs other relevant tasks as assigned by the program or classroom teacher.
  • Supports the care of other students in the classroom when appropriate, ensuring it does not disrupt the care of students with special needs.
  • Participates in the IEP process or educational planning meetings when requested.
  • Assists other classroom personnel as necessary to facilitate their work activities.
  • Accompanies students on transportation to and from school as required.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Previous relevant experience is preferred.
  • Skills and Knowledge: Proficiency in operating standard office equipment, effective communication in English, and basic arithmetic skills.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of first aid practices, health care procedures, and common childhood illnesses.
  • Abilities: Ability to maintain accurate records, utilize computer systems, and demonstrate patience and flexibility when working with students with special needs.

Education and Certification:

  • Required: Valid LPN license.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance is mandatory.
  • Other: Standard First Aid and CPR certifications may be required.
