Job Overview

SUMMARY: The Senior Financial Officer is expected to demonstrate exceptional technical expertise and a thorough understanding of accounting principles and concepts relevant to financial reporting. This role requires the ability to analyze and provide solutions to intricate accounting challenges. The Senior Financial Officer will collaborate closely with the Chief Financial Officer to manage the daily operations of the Accounting Department. This position is responsible for maintaining essential schedules and documentation for monthly closings, quarterly reviews, and the annual audit process.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Functions

  • Execute daily and month-end closing entries, including revenue, payroll, prepaid expenses, depreciation, unbilled accounts receivable, and accrued liabilities.
  • Reconcile sub-ledger to general ledger account balances.
  • Conduct monthly reconciliations of bank accounts.
  • Maintain and reconcile fixed assets and prepaid schedules.
  • Oversee the reconciliation of HSA, DCA, and FSA Accounts.
  • Assist in the month-end and fiscal year-end closing processes in accordance with GAAP.
  • Support the CFO and external auditors during year-end by preparing schedules, providing explanations of supporting materials and procedures, and generating any necessary reports and schedules.
  • Recommend and enforce internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheets, income statements, and changes in financial position.
  • Generate monthly financial statements.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure proper account coding for all transaction classes in line with organizational policy.
  • Provide support to the CFO and other finance staff for various health center reports, including Medicare cost reports, grant budgeting, and payroll reporting.

Grants Management (in collaboration with other Senior Accountants)

  • Provide technical assistance and general support for grants administration and financial reporting, including federal grants (such as the 330 FQHC and Ryan White Part C grants), state grants (like the Pennsylvania Challenge Grants), and private grants. Collaborate with project teams to develop program budgets for state and private grants.
  • Manage grants and revenue across health center departments, particularly reconciling general ledger reports with patient billing systems, donor databases, and other activities.
  • Maintain and provide necessary records and documentation to support grant-specific audits.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting or equivalent training and experience is required.
  • 5-7 years of experience in an accounting role is required, preferably within a non-profit organization.
  • Familiarity with grants management and reporting is preferred.
  • Strong systems background with integrated financial software packages; knowledge of Blackbaud Financial Edge is a plus.
  • Understanding of FAR, CFR, as well as GAAP/FASB standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; strong Excel skills are essential.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A solid track record of handling confidential information and data.
  • Strong leadership and management capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, managing multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.
