Controls Field Service Engineer I

Position Summary:

A Controls Field Service Engineer I (FSE) collaborates with fellow engineers, clients, and suppliers to implement cutting-edge technologies for integrating material handling systems tailored to intricate applications. The Controls FSE is tasked with commissioning duties for both new and existing systems, engaging with large-scale material handling solutions that often involve our Controls, Software, Robotics, and Consulting Teams throughout the project lifecycle. This role utilizes a comprehensive range of material handling technologies, from basic gravity conveyors to advanced shoe sorters equipped with servo-driven diverts, PLCs, HMIs, scanners, and sophisticated add-ons like automated carton erection or print and apply systems. The Controls Field Service Engineer plays a crucial role in supporting automation initiatives, demonstrating proficiency in device troubleshooting, HMI development, PLC programming and debugging, software debugging, on-site system validation, and ensuring optimal system throughput and efficiency. As expertise develops, the Controls FSE may contribute to aligning reports and coding standards with engineering design protocols, assist in harmonizing various teams, and undertake additional responsibilities under the supervision of the execution team.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • Familiarity with automation, particularly in material handling systems, is advantageous
  • Experience with Allen Bradley or Siemens PLCs and HMIs (or equivalent) is preferred
  • Knowledge of Ignition SCADA software is a plus
  • Strong aptitude for hands-on electrical and mechanical troubleshooting
  • Proficient in MS Office applications
  • Exceptional problem-solving and time management abilities
  • Willingness to travel extensively
Key Responsibilities:
  • Installation, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of equipment
  • Commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of safety circuits
  • Network setup and troubleshooting
  • Electrical troubleshooting, including safe use of basic electrical tools (e.g., multimeter, cable testing equipment) and understanding of industrial voltages and wire color codes
  • Documentation, including I/O checkout and commissioning checklists, redline drawings, and daily site reports
  • Programming for PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment, demonstrating strong communication and organizational skills
  • Development and implementation of standard practices to enhance quality and reduce costs
  • Technical problem-solving, both independently and through collaboration
  • Successful delivery of automation projects with a focus on customer satisfaction, timelines, and budget adherence
