Position Overview:

The Automation Systems Engineer collaborates with a team of engineers, clients, and suppliers to implement cutting-edge technologies for integrating material handling systems tailored for intricate applications.

This role involves executing commissioning tasks on both new and existing systems, working on large-scale material handling solutions that incorporate our Controls, Software, Robotics, and Consulting Teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Technologies:
This position utilizes a comprehensive range of material handling technologies, including:

  • Conveyors, from basic gravity systems to advanced shoe sorters with servo-driven diverts
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs)
  • Scanning technologies
  • Complex add-ons such as automated carton erection and print-and-apply systems

Responsibilities:
The Automation Systems Engineer is accountable for supporting automation initiatives, which includes:

  • Troubleshooting devices
  • Developing HMIs
  • Programming and debugging PLCs
  • Debugging software
  • Conducting onsite system checkouts and startups
  • Validating system throughput and efficiency

As expertise increases, the engineer may also assist in aligning reports and coding standards with engineering design principles, support team integration, and undertake additional tasks under the supervision of the execution team.

Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

  • An engineering degree or a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in automation, particularly within material handling systems
  • Familiarity with Allen Bradley or Siemens PLCs & HMIs (or similar)
  • Experience with Ignition SCADA software is advantageous
  • A strong aptitude for hands-on electrical and mechanical troubleshooting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent problem-solving and time management abilities
  • Willingness to travel extensively

General Duties:
The role includes:

  • Installation, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of equipment
  • Commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of safety circuits
  • Setting up and troubleshooting networks
  • Electrical troubleshooting using basic electrical tools (e.g., multimeters, cable testing equipment) and understanding of industrial voltages and wire color codes
  • Documentation, including I/O checkouts, commissioning checklists, redline drawings, and daily site reports
  • PLC, HMI, and SCADA programming
  • Collaboration within a team environment, showcasing strong communication and organizational skills
  • Development and implementation of standard practices for quality improvement and cost reduction
  • Resolution of technical challenges, either independently or through teamwork
  • Successful delivery of automation projects, ensuring customer satisfaction, adherence to schedules, and budget compliance
