POSITION OVERVIEW
The primary responsibility of this role is to uphold health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards, process safety management (PSM), and quality management system (QSM) protocols within the designated area. This position supervises the operational and maintenance activities of the department to fulfill both internal and external customer expectations regarding volume and quality, while ensuring long-term profitability. This necessitates close collaboration and communication with the Operations, Customer Service, and Maintenance teams. Key responsibilities include tracking production and costs, providing engineering support, monitoring operational reliability, serving as a resource for project/process engineering, and ensuring compliance with safety and procedural standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct and coordinate operational and maintenance resources to meet safety, environmental, quality, production, and cost targets. Contribute to the development of weekly and daily maintenance plans by generating and prioritizing notifications. Analyze operational data (laboratory results, logbooks, records, accountability boards, etc.) and ensure corrective actions are implemented for any identified issues. Provide clear written and verbal instructions to Operators and Shift Supervisors. Foster a culture of continuous improvement focused on safety, environmental stewardship, customer service, cost efficiency, and productivity. Monitor departmental safety by assessing housekeeping and potential hazards, enforcing safety regulations, and leading safety initiatives. Ensure adherence to environmental permits, corporate policies, and OSHA regulations. Assist the production superintendent in preparing the annual operating forecast, as well as operating, maintenance, and capital budgets. Identify and execute projects aimed at enhancing operational efficiency. Maintain effective communication with other plant departments and management. Address customer inquiries and concerns related to products in the area. Manage the labor contract within the department. Encourage teamwork, resolve conflicts, and cultivate strong working relationships while providing training and mentorship to staff.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required. 1-2 years of experience in the chemical sector is preferred. Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting, manage multiple projects, and make sound decisions. Proven leadership capabilities. Strong communication skills.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
A degree in chemical engineering is preferred. Experience in a relevant chemical industry is advantageous. Experience supervising hourly employees is a plus. Familiarity with working in a unionized environment and managing labor contracts is beneficial.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This role may oversee up to 10 hourly employees.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use steps and ladders, handle materials, reach with hands and arms, and communicate verbally. Occasionally, the employee may need to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment noise level is typically moderate, primarily based in an office setting. Work in operational units is required, which may necessitate the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses and hearing protection. Exposure to outdoor elements may occur, and the role may involve the use of stairs and elevators. Occasional travel, including air and auto travel, may be necessary.
