Job Summary

The Specimen Processing Specialist is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a medical data entry background and involves verifying patient demographics, physician data, and test requests.

Key Responsibilities
  • Verify patient demographics, physician data, tests requested, and clinical information on laboratory request forms.
  • Identify problems with specimen types, missing information, and engage Client Services to resolve them.
  • Accurately enter patient information into the laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Develop an understanding of how all functions in Specimen Processing fit together.
Requirements
  • High School degree or equivalent required.
  • One or more years of previous laboratory and/or data entry experience.
  • Data entry, high attention to detail, and focus on quality are essential.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and medications.
  • Typing speed of at least 45 words per minute with a high accuracy rate.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to decipher various forms of handwriting.
  • Excellent skills in English usage, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Maintains composure while working under pressure.
  • Reflects good judgment at all times when determining what action to take when resolving problems.
  • Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
  • Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
  • Ability to tolerate extensive periods seated and/or standing.
  • Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes, and bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.
  • May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents; handle live human specimens, tissues, and bodily fluid.
