Providence, Rhode Island, United States Rhode Island School of Design Full time
Position Overview

The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is seeking a Student Employment Advisor to support the management of student employment initiatives and provide guidance to students regarding their employment opportunities while enrolled at the institution. The Student Employment Office plays a crucial role in assisting students and supervisors with all facets of on-campus employment and off-campus federal work-study programs.

With a strong dedication to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and equity in fulfilling essential duties, the Student Employment Advisor is an integral member of the Student Employment team, responsible for delivering vital administrative assistance to the department as well as training and onboarding for student workers.

We are looking for a culturally aware candidate who will excel in a campus setting that prioritizes the advancement of social equity and inclusion, environmental and climate justice, and equitable access to resources and opportunities.

As an employer, RISD provides a supportive, collaborative, and inclusive work atmosphere along with a competitive benefits package.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure timely and precise onboarding for domestic, international, undergraduate, and graduate students for both on-campus and approved off-campus roles.
  • Oversee the operations of the Student Employment front desk, including providing prompt and accurate responses to inquiries from students, employers, and other stakeholders. Maintain tracking sheets for walk-in and appointment volumes.
  • Compile and present monthly metrics to the Director of Student Employment and the Student Financial Services team regarding front desk, phone, and email interactions.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and supervise student employees to manage front desk operations.
  • Administer the off-campus Federal Work Study program, including maintaining job listings, authorizing student employment, and invoicing partner agencies. Ensure compliance with payroll authorizations, job descriptions, wage scales, and off-campus Federal Work-Study contracts.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Employment to develop and enhance off-campus job opportunities for Federal Work Study students by establishing relationships with non-profit organizations.
  • Facilitate training sessions for students, faculty, and staff on various student employment topics, including onboarding for new students and supervisors, as well as targeted training for specific student demographics.
  • Plan and execute recognition events such as National Student Employment Week activities, including ceremonies for Student Employee and Student Supervisor of the Year.
  • Coordinate the student employment payroll process, ensuring accurate submission of hours worked by on-campus hourly students.
  • Monitor, analyze, and prepare reports on student earnings in relation to budget constraints and financial need, alerting students and supervisors when Federal Work Study balances are low.
  • Maintain the job board to ensure all on-campus job postings meet established standards, including equitable pay rates and unbiased language.
  • Provide administrative support for graduate assistantships, including communication with graduate students and management of assistantship documentation.
Required Qualifications:
  • Ability to foster a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations governing work-study and employment.
  • Proficiency in PC and MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong presentation skills and experience in creating effective training materials.
  • Experience in delivering training in various formats, including live and recorded sessions.
  • Familiarity with the I-9 process for domestic and international students.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
