POSITION DESCRIPTION

Are you dedicated to ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of students? Join our team as the Fleet Operations Manager. In this role, you will oversee our transportation division, ensuring the effective and economical management of our vehicle fleet while prioritizing student safety.


QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS

The ideal candidate for the Fleet Operations Manager position will be a meticulous and organized professional with a strong focus on safety and operational efficiency.

Excellent leadership and communication skills are essential for effectively managing a diverse team and collaborating with various stakeholders.

A comprehensive understanding of transportation regulations and compliance is crucial, along with the capability to conduct accident investigations and maintain the fleet appropriately.

The candidate should be proactive, possess strong problem-solving skills, and be able to make prompt decisions, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Additionally, fiscal responsibility, budgeting expertise, and accurate cost record maintenance are vital.

A commitment to student safety and a passion for continuous improvement in transportation services are key attributes for success in this role.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Supervise the maintenance program for a fleet of vehicles, focusing on safety inspections.

Implement procedures to ensure the effectiveness of maintenance within safety programs.

Establish performance standards and oversee the operational care, service, and upkeep of all vehicles in the department.

Provide insights regarding the fleet to facilitate the acquisition of new vehicles and manage surplus declarations.

Conduct investigations into accidents and oversee the reporting process to relevant law enforcement and insurance entities.

Ensure adherence to regulations and policies concerning training, licensing, registration, and operational permits.

Stay informed about laws and policies regarding student transportation and safety.

Recruit, recommend for employment, and assess transportation department staff.

Manage bus drivers, including scheduling for regular routes, events, field trips, and summer programs.

Ensure substitute coverage for emergency driver absences.

Coordinate special transportation for events, including arrangements with charter bus companies.

Evaluate and monitor charter bus service providers.

Ensure safety at all bus stops.

Provide guidance on behavior management for students.

Maintain a pool of adequately trained substitute bus drivers.

Review school bus specifications to meet departmental needs and comply with state and federal regulations.

Recommend the procurement of additional or replacement buses and the disposal of outdated or inefficient units.

Maintain effective communication with school leaders, parents, students, and faculty.

Assist in developing the transportation department budget and manage allocated funds.

Help in formulating regular bus routes, schedules, and stops. Create route maps for drivers and schools as necessary.

Maintain accurate cost accounting records.

Gather data and prepare required transportation reports, ensuring timely submission.

Coordinate transportation activities with school officials, department heads, and other stakeholders.


Participate in parent/student conferences with school officials to address or prevent misconduct and unsafe conditions related to transportation.

Conduct ongoing training for bus drivers and traffic safety programs.

Arrange training for newly hired CDL drivers.

Continuously evaluate all aspects of the transportation program.


Assess road safety during adverse weather and provide timely updates to the Director of Facilities and Assistant Head of School for Operations.

Ensure appropriate fiscal management of all allocated funds in accordance with laws and policies.

Comply with and support school and division regulations and policies.

Attend training sessions to enhance skills, knowledge, and attitudes related to school transportation and student management.

Model inclusive practices in all activities.

Perform related duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities in line with school policies and practices.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate must possess a high school diploma or GED and hold a current CDL license with the School endorsement.

The candidate must meet school bus driver certification requirements.

Ideally, the candidate will have knowledge of auto mechanics and over five years of experience managing a fleet of buses or similarly sized vehicles.

The candidate must be proficient with technology, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and scheduling systems.
