Claims Risk Management Advisor

Position Overview
This role is positioned within the Office of Risk Management, which is dedicated to fostering a secure educational, occupational, and research atmosphere. The department provides essential frameworks and expert services to ensure that the institution can effectively pursue its mission while maintaining compliance and managing diverse risk exposures associated with its operations.

Key Responsibilities
The Claims Risk Management Advisor will operate under the direction of the Executive Director of Risk Management and will be instrumental in overseeing the management of property, liability, and workers' compensation claims, along with other related risk management processes. Key responsibilities include:
  • Gathering and documenting incident information upon claim reporting.
  • Administering the application process for self-insured workers' compensation programs.
  • Conducting thorough investigations of claims upon receipt and coordinating necessary remediation efforts.
  • Facilitating claim review meetings and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Managing processes for accurate reporting of claims to insurance providers, including requirements related to excess insurance carriers.
  • Collaborating with third-party administrators, in-house counsel, and external legal advisors to address claim-related matters.
  • Communicating claim statuses to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Partnering with departments to support employees in achieving a sustainable return to work.
  • Researching and evaluating the operations of third-party administrators concerning claims, loss runs, and reserves for compliance.
  • Utilizing loss analysis and risk management information systems to enhance safety programs.
  • Identifying and implementing training solutions for both pre and post-loss scenarios.
  • Coordinating safety and loss prevention services.
  • Building collaborative relationships with campus stakeholders to identify and manage risk areas.
  • Reporting findings to the Executive Director of Risk Management and advising on significant risk management strategies.
  • Providing management dashboards on claims activity and maintaining comprehensive reports.
  • Supporting various University committees as needed.
  • Assisting the Executive Director of Risk Management and other departments with special projects.
  • Ensuring that University contracts include appropriate insurance stipulations and negotiating these requirements as necessary.
  • Performing additional related duties as required.

Qualifications
Education:
A minimum of a college or university degree in a relevant field is required.

Experience:
At least 5 years of experience in industry and claims management is preferred, with extensive knowledge of laws and claim issues related to property, general liability, automobile liability, and workers' compensation. A strong foundation in finance and the ability to comprehend complex insurance policies is essential. Experience in healthcare or higher education insurance is advantageous, along with a general understanding of contract and corporate law, as well as loss prevention and claims management principles.

Technical Skills:
Proficiency in personal computer applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is required. An understanding of insurance markets and property insurance is also beneficial.
