Position Overview
The Department of French & Italian at the University of Minnesota seeks to maintain a diverse pool of lecturers and teaching specialists dedicated to delivering French and Italian language courses. These courses primarily focus on foundational language skills and are designed to supplement the instructional capabilities of our regular faculty and graduate teaching assistants.
These roles may be offered on a full-time or part-time basis during the fall or spring semesters, as well as in the summer term. Classes may be scheduled during the day, evening, or a combination of both, following a semesterly format. Compensation is competitive and will be determined based on individual qualifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Instruct assigned language classes/sections.
- Maintain office hours for student support.
- Develop and prepare course materials.
- Engage in curriculum enhancement activities.
- Design and evaluate examinations.
- Participate in departmental meetings as necessary.
Teaching commitments are structured as follows: teaching one course per semester accounts for 34% of the workload; teaching two courses equates to 68%; teaching two courses while assisting with an additional course represents 84%; and teaching three courses fulfills 100% of the workload.
This announcement serves to create a candidate pool for potential openings throughout the academic year, with selections made on an as-needed basis.
Qualifications
Required:
- M.A. or an equivalent degree in French, Italian, or a related field.
- Native or near-native proficiency in French or Italian.
- Strong communication skills in English.
- Experience teaching at the university level in French or Italian language.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
Preferred:
- Ph.D. or equivalent in French, Italian, or a related field.
- Two or more years of experience teaching at the university level in French or Italian language.
- Candidates holding a Master's degree will be appointed as Teaching Specialists, while those with a Ph.D. will be designated as Lecturers.
