Position Overview

The Ophthalmic Assistant/Technician plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional patient care within an integrated eye care unit. This position requires a compassionate approach to patient interactions, strict adherence to confidentiality, and the ability to perform a variety of diagnostic tests as directed by ophthalmologists. A proactive attitude, adaptability, and a commitment to professional development are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including gathering medical histories, reviewing current medications, and evaluating visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and ocular muscle function. Proficiently perform tests such as lensometry, Amsler grid testing, color vision assessments, and various refraction techniques.
  • Administer advanced ophthalmic evaluations, including A/B scans, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography, automated visual field tests, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus photography, and IOL Master assessments. Educate patients on procedures and maintain accurate records in compliance with professional standards.
  • Manage daily operational tasks, including scheduling appointments, coordinating with medical staff, handling medication refills, and addressing patient inquiries. Participate in educational sessions and professional development activities.
  • Ensure the examination areas are properly prepared and equipped, including the maintenance and organization of necessary supplies and instruments. Regularly check and maintain the functionality of all equipment.
  • Assist physicians with electronic medical record (EMR) documentation and perform additional tasks such as equipment sanitation and preparation for procedures.
  • Engage in specialized functions as required, including phlebotomy for imaging purposes, with training provided. Support research activities and assist in minor surgical procedures as needed. Mentor junior staff in standard ophthalmic practices.
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ophthalmic Assistant: High school diploma with a minimum of six months of clinical experience in an ophthalmic setting.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA): High school diploma with at least one year of experience in ophthalmology, preferably including clinical practicum. Completion of the home study course for the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is required.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT): High school diploma and graduation from an accredited ophthalmic technician program, with at least one year of experience as an ophthalmic assistant or equivalent. Certification as a COT by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is necessary.

Preferred:

Some college education or a degree in a related field is advantageous.

Compensation

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications:

  • $46,000+ for Uncertified Ophthalmic Assistants
  • $49,000+ for Certified Ophthalmic Assistants
  • $52,000+ for Certified Ophthalmic Technicians

Work Environment

  • Uniforms and personal protective equipment are provided.
  • Work may involve exposure to various environmental conditions typical of a clinical setting.
  • Regular use of office equipment and manual dexterity is required.
  • Physical demands may include lifting and moving equipment.
