Overview

Austin Retina Associates is in search of a dedicated and proactive individual for a full-time position as a retinal imaging specialist.

The Diagnostic Technician will be tasked with executing advanced diagnostic evaluations for all medical professionals at Austin Retina. This role encompasses technical assessments, clinical assistance, and patient interaction for various specialists.
Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts diagnostic evaluations for medical professionals, including OCTs, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, A/B/UBM scans (ultrasound), and visual fields:
OCT, Anterior & Posterior Segment

Fundus Photography

Ultra Wide Field Fundus Imaging

Auto-Fluorescence Imaging

Fluorescein Angiography with venipuncture

Indocyanine Green Angiography with venipuncture

Ocular Biometry and Ultrasonography, Ascan- biometry, Diagnostic-A, Bscan and UBM

Visual Fields: Humphrey VF
  • Collaborates with clinical personnel to minimize wait times for both physicians and patients.
  • Documents images and notes in the electronic medical record system.
  • Performs venipunctures as required for angiograms and Photodynamic Therapy.
  • Addresses inquiries from physicians and colleagues regarding images, providing technical insights.
  • In relation to diagnostic testing services, the employee will assist with:
Triage/ Work up technician

Expeditor- preparing and rooming patients for the physician

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) preparation including venipuncture

Support in in-office procedures, including obtaining consent, setup, and numbing

Achieve and maintain certification for institute-wide and international clinical trials
  • Performs clinical-administrative duties such as checking diagnostic schedules, data entry, verifying request forms in advance, printing results, and other administrative tasks as required by the department.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of rooms according to practice requirements and adheres to office policies regarding locked items, sharps, and checking medications for expiration dates.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
  • Proven ability to demonstrate courtesy, diligence, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including effective listening, clear communication, and problem resolution.
  • Ability to navigate multiple computer systems for data entry and retrieval.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmology and retina terminology.
  • Capability to travel to various locations as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to safely perform venipunctures.
  • Valid Texas driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to follow-through.
  • Dedication to continuous learning and knowledge application of medical terminology, focusing on ophthalmic anatomy and physiology.
  • Experience with ophthalmic equipment maintenance and basic repairs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, including optometry, ophthalmology, or technical training with certification from the Ophthalmic Photographers Society, Joint Commission of Allied Health in Personnel Ophthalmology, or other recognized certifying bodies; or an associate degree in a relevant science with two years of related laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification as a Retinal Angiographer (CRA), Optical Coherence Tomography - Certified (OCT-C), Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), or the ability to obtain within two years of hire.
  • Experience in retina or ophthalmology is preferred, especially for candidates with experience in OCTs, fundus photography, A/B scans (ultrasonography), and/or phlebotomy.
  • Previous experience is preferred, with some training provided to qualified candidates.
Position Information
  • Flexibility to work extended or irregular hours based on departmental needs, including occasional overtime. Schedules may vary, with rare weekend days and early start times.
  • Travel within a specified radius is required using company-provided transportation, with day trips only.
  • Hourly compensation, FLSA non-exempt, eligible for overtime.
Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of standing and walking, some sitting, talking, and hearing both in person and by telephone; use of hands to manipulate objects or controls; reaching with hands and arms. Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, and occasionally lift up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this role include the ability to view multiple computer screens, close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Frequent viewing of images and operating computer devices is necessary.
