Job Overview

Position Summary

The Senior Project Engineer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the successful delivery of technical project outcomes by collaborating closely with chief engineers, subsystem technical leads, engineering functional managers, and project managers. This position involves engaging with engineering teams throughout the phases of design, analysis, prototyping, integration, troubleshooting, and verification, while also assisting in the transition of new products into production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enhance product development methodologies by leveraging lessons learned and best practices, including modeling and simulation, design reviews, DFMEA, Six Sigma/lean product development, DFX, and customer feedback.
  • Facilitate coordination among cross-functional teams through regular meetings and progress tracking to ensure timely and budget-conscious completion of specific projects.
  • Contribute to the development of subsystem specifications, performance evaluations, and characterization to support overarching system requirements.
  • Engage in prototype builds and collaborate with key suppliers, contractors, and third-party design service providers.
  • Drive the formulation of subsystem specifications and performance evaluations in alignment with system requirements.
  • Oversee daily technical aspects of projects, promoting cross-disciplinary decision-making, conducting design reviews, managing defect tracking, and addressing engineering tasks and schedules.
  • Introduce innovative tools to enhance project engineering excellence.
  • Resolve a variety of challenges creatively.
  • Address problems of diverse scope, requiring thorough analysis of identifiable factors.
  • Typically operates with minimal guidance on routine tasks, receiving general instructions for new assignments.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A minimum of 5 to 8 years of pertinent technical experience in product development.
  • Demonstrated experience with the complete product development lifecycle from concept through to production, with a proven history of successfully launching new products.
  • Proficient in executing product development methodologies and best practices.
  • Experience collaborating with integrated product teams.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge and experience to evaluate design and development activities across various engineering disciplines.
  • Strong organizational, facilitation, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to analyze projects, decompose work into functional disciplines or subsystems, and create effective design and development plans.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced technical degree is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the aerospace military/defense contracting environment is highly desirable.
  • Exhibits sound judgment in selecting appropriate methods and techniques for problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ownership and accountability for delivering products that meet specifications on time and within budget.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment where small teams share a diverse range of responsibilities.
  • Displays strong initiative and determination to achieve goals and fulfill company objectives.
  • Takes responsibility for both current and past work outputs.
  • Committed to learning from past experiences and motivated to enhance personal and organizational performance.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in both office and manufacturing settings (Constant).
  • Required to sit and stand for extended periods; must be able to talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard (Frequent).

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $102,708 - $145,530. AeroVironment considers various factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to location, role responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
