In the United States, millions are just one paycheck away from homelessness. In Washtenaw County alone, a significant number of individuals are currently facing homelessness.

The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County (SAWC), established in 1982, serves as the primary provider of essential services and emergency shelter for individuals in Washtenaw County.

SAWC operates from a central facility and caters to a diverse population, including first-time homeless individuals, veterans, survivors of domestic violence, and those grappling with substance abuse or mental health challenges.
Our Core Services Include:
Emergency Shelter, Non-Residential Support, Shelter Diversion, Critical-Time Intervention, and Warming Shelter. Annually, SAWC assists nearly 1500 individuals.

Mission:
To end homelessness, one individual at a time.

Position Overview:


This role is an integral part of the Shelter Operations Team, responsible for ensuring the efficient functioning of shelter operations during assigned shifts.

Key responsibilities include maintaining the safety of all guests, delivering exceptional customer service, and executing tasks in alignment with the overarching mission of the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County.

The Shelter operates continuously and remains open at all times.

The compensation for this position ranges from $18.50/hr to $19.50/hr, depending on tenure in the role.

The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County provides a comprehensive benefits package that encompasses:

Generous paid time off includes 12 days after six months of employment and 24 days annually after one year of service.

The standard work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, from 7:45 AM to 4:15 PM.

General Responsibilities:

  • Committed to the mission of SAWC in addressing homelessness.
  • Engaging with clients in a respectful and ethical manner (in accordance with NASW Code of Ethics).
  • Providing supportive, empathetic, and confidential assistance to clients.
  • Familiarizing oneself with and adhering to SAWC policies and procedures.
  • Documenting client information and activities in HMIS and staff notes accurately and professionally.
  • Availability to work on holidays.
  • Punctuality and accurate timekeeping.
  • Assisting clients in obtaining necessary identification and documentation.
  • Coordinating on-site services and activities for guests, including collaborations with other agencies and organizations.
  • Overseeing the operations of various shelter floors.
  • Performing light cleaning and laundry duties.
  • Undertaking additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:
Associate's Degree, professional certification, or equivalent experience is preferred. Relevant experience in housing, mental health, substance dependency, and poverty issues is advantageous. Experience in social work, social services, or human services is also beneficial. Note that SAWC will consider alternative, comparable experience in lieu of a degree.
