Position Overview

The Canine Training Specialist is tasked with ensuring brand consistency in dog training, delivering all program offerings, and upholding operational standards within the Pet Care Center. This role serves as the primary resource and leader in the Pet Care Center for Petco's Positive Dog Training program, responsible for achieving the budgeted dog training sales goals through effective sales strategies while educating and engaging all Pet Care Center associates.

As a Canine Training Specialist, adherence to Petco's Positive Dog Training curricula, policies, and methodologies is essential. The program emphasizes LIMA principles, which stand for least intrusive, minimally aversive, and highlights the importance of the trainer's skills and knowledge to prioritize health and wellness throughout the training process. A commitment to enhancing communication and teamwork between dogs and their owners is crucial, providing positive solutions and rewarding success while ensuring a fun and safe environment for all.

  • Promote the science-based positive training philosophies of the Petco Positive Dog Training Program, ensuring a safe training environment for pet owners, guests, dogs, and all Petco associates.
  • Maintain ethical standards while interacting with dogs, pet owners, and all Pet Care Center associates.
  • Confidently execute all tasks and responsibilities outlined in the Dog Training Instructor Program (DTIP).
  • Develop training plans for pet owners and their dogs, focusing on positive reinforcement and eliminating punitive measures.
  • Collaborate with Pet Care Center associates to build strong community partnerships to enhance the dog training business.
  • Exhibit excellent listening skills and effectively coach in an encouraging manner, delivering information clearly and efficiently.
  • Engage in formal presentations, capturing attention, establishing clear directions, and creating a motivating atmosphere.
  • Stay informed about new products and services to engage with guests regarding their features and benefits.
  • Complete Petco's Positive Dog Training Instructor Program with a certified mentor within the specified timeframe.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the dog training area and equipment in accordance with operational guidelines.
  • Advocate for the role of Canine Training Specialist within the Pet Care Center and local community, representing Petco's diverse culture and positive environment.

Other Essential Duties

Provide prompt and courteous service to all Petco guests by identifying their needs and sharing product knowledge and training recommendations. Adhere to and promote established safety and loss prevention procedures.

Basic Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED is generally preferred. Successful completion of Petco's Positive Dog Training Instructor Program upon hiring is required.

Experience in public speaking, presenting, and facilitating group activities is beneficial. Comfort with technology and the ability to assist others with troubleshooting is essential. Basic computer skills with the ability to research information online are necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Certifications such as CPDT-KA or Karen Pryor Academy (KPA-CTP) are preferred. Previous experience in teaching positive reinforcement dog training techniques in group settings is advantageous.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

The majority of duties are performed indoors, although some tasks may require brief outdoor activity. This role involves bending, kneeling, moving merchandise, and standing for extended periods. The ability to lift 50 lbs and pull 2000 lbs using material handling equipment is required. Following safety precautions and procedures is essential to prevent injury to customers, pets, and staff.
