Position Overview

The Canine Training Specialist is tasked with ensuring brand consistency in dog training, delivering all program offerings, and upholding operational standards within the Pet Care Center. This role serves as the primary resource and leader in the Pet Care Center for Petco's Positive Dog Training program, with accountability for achieving budgeted sales goals in dog training by driving sales and engaging all Pet Care Center partners.

As a Canine Training Specialist, you will adhere to Petco's Positive Dog Training curriculums, policies, and methodologies. The program emphasizes LIMA principles, which stand for least intrusive, minimally aversive, highlighting the importance of trainer skillsets and knowledge to prioritize Health & Wellness throughout the training process. Your commitment to enhancing communication and teamwork between dogs and their owners is essential, as you provide positive solutions and rewarding experiences in a fun and safe environment.

  • Promote the science-based positive training philosophies of the Petco Positive Dog Training Program while ensuring a safe training environment for all.
  • Maintain ethical standards in interactions with dogs, pet owners, and Pet Care Center partners.
  • Confidently execute all tasks and duties as outlined in the Dog Training Instructor Program (DTIP).
  • Develop tailored training plans for pet owners and their dogs, focusing on positive reinforcement and minimizing punishment.
  • Collaborate with Pet Care Center partners to build strong community relationships and grow the dog training business.
  • Exhibit excellent listening skills and coach effectively in an encouraging manner.
  • Deliver engaging presentations that capture attention and motivate others.
  • Stay informed about new products and services to effectively engage with customers.
  • Complete the Petco Positive Dog Training Instructor Program with a certified mentor and adhere to onboarding timelines.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the dog training area in accordance with operational guidelines.

Additional Duties

Provide prompt and courteous service to all customers by identifying their needs and sharing product knowledge and training recommendations. Adhere to established safety and loss prevention procedures.

Basic Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED is generally preferred. Successful completion of Petco's Positive Dog Training Instructor Program is required upon hiring.

Experience in public speaking and group facilitation is beneficial. Comfort with technology and the ability to assist others with troubleshooting is essential. Basic computer skills are necessary for researching information online.

Preferred Qualifications

Certifications such as CPDT-KA or Karen Pryor Academy (KPA-CTP) are preferred. Previous experience in teaching positive reinforcement dog training techniques in group settings is advantageous.

Work Environment

This position primarily involves indoor duties, although some tasks may require brief outdoor activity. The role necessitates physical activity, including bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods. Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and utilize material handling equipment safely.
