Job Summary

Atrium Health is seeking a highly skilled Cytogenetic Technologist to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory, you will be responsible for performing a variety of complex tasks related to genetic analysis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Specimen Processing: Ensure the integrity of specimens during all phases of processing, including setup, harvesting, and staining.
  • Culturing Procedures: Establish blood, bone marrow, and biopsy cultures, monitor growth levels, and make decisions regarding feeding, subculturing, and harvesting.
  • Slide Preparation and Staining: Perform various slide preparations and staining techniques, including standard Geisma, Q-, R-, C- banding, and NOR staining.
  • Microscopic Analysis: Conduct detailed microscopic analysis, rule out chromosomal mosaicism, and make decisions regarding optimal cells for documentation.
  • FISH Processing and Analysis: Perform FISH processing and analysis, and manage record keeping and stock supply levels.
  • Quality Control: Monitor CO2 levels in incubators, CO2 supply, and liquid N2 levels, and perform periodic disinfection and maintenance of equipment.
  • Continuing Education: Stay knowledgeable about research and development within the cytogenetics field, and participate in compilation of validation data.
  • Communication: Report any problems that might adversely affect patient care to supervisory personnel, and utilize effective LIS and equipment data management skills.
Physical Requirements

This role requires long periods of sitting during analytical procedures, long periods of standing during harvest procedures, and manual dexterity. You will work in an area that contains biohazardous materials, chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. Each employee has the responsibility to work in a safe manner, and may be required to stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Education and Certifications

A Bachelor's degree in any Life Science, Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent), and/or Technologist in Cytogenetics (ASCP or equivalent) is required.
