Overview of Responsibilities

This role within the NCDOT presents competitive salaries along with numerous career advancement opportunities. The Geotechnical Engineering Unit is in search of a Geotechnical Engineer for the Eastern Regional Design Section.

As an Engineer II, your responsibilities will include:
  • Conducting engineering tasks related to the design and formulation of plans for roadway embankments, slopes, retaining structures, sound barriers, and bridge foundations, utilizing mathematical modeling and software based on established theories and practices for pile capacity, soil interaction, slope stability, and shoring.
  • Collaborating with various units within the Department, particularly with Divisions, Roadway Design, Structure Management, Hydraulics, Traffic Control, and Project Management Units to deliver required services.
  • Assisting in the creation of proposals and cost assessments for consulting services.
  • Evaluating geotechnical designs produced by internal staff or external consultants to ensure compliance with NCDOT standards and practices.
  • Providing technical support and guidance to Division offices regarding geotechnical considerations in design and construction for their projects.
  • Participating in value management teams to assess geotechnical elements of projects and review engineering proposals.
  • Attending geotechnical conferences, technical meetings, and professional engineering organizations.
Travel may be necessary for this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Applicants must demonstrate experience in the following areas:
  • Understanding and interpreting construction plans, specifications, policies, and regulations.
  • Evaluating soil and rock properties and applying them to geotechnical analyses such as stress distribution, settlement, slope stability, and foundation design.
  • Utilizing software tools like APile, LPile, FB-Multipier, GRLWEAP, and Slide for geotechnical analysis.
  • Writing recommendations for infrastructure projects including roadways, bridges, and retaining structures.
  • Effectively communicating and maintaining professional relationships with colleagues, contractors, and the public.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field from an accredited institution along with three years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Registration as a professional engineer may be required.
