Overview: The Chief Executive Officer in Salt Lake City is responsible for steering the operational implementation of Best Friends Animal Society's mission and vision. This role involves formulating, prioritizing, and executing local program strategies, overseeing large-scale facilities, initiatives, and personnel. The CEO acts as the main connection for stakeholders and operates with considerable independence.

- Set an example through direct and meaningful contributions towards achieving Best Friends' no-kill 2025 objective; act swiftly and effectively on behalf of animals at risk of euthanasia in shelters across the region and nationwide; guide teams in their vital role as ambassadors for Best Friends' legacy, mission, and no-kill aspirations.
- Establish lifesaving objectives alongside other quantitative and qualitative success metrics; lead the execution of strategies and programs to reach these lifesaving targets through comprehensive management of all lifesaving initiatives, including necessary program redesigns to meet goals.
- Articulate the vision and goals while devising strategies to realize that vision. Communicate the progress of these strategies to staff, supporters, and stakeholders; engage in meetings with potential donors as coordinated by development staff; co-lead the development and local execution of Best Friends' branding and public relations strategies with communication teams; represent Best Friends at events, conferences, and public speaking engagements.

- Demonstrate and promote a high level of personal service in alignment with Best Friends' brand and hospitality standards for all clientele, including members, donors, volunteers, and associates. Build and nurture a dynamic team that is collaborative, friendly, open-minded, attentive to guest interactions while effectively saving animals.
- Oversee human resource functions in collaboration with the Human Resources and Employee Relations departments regarding staff recruitment, management, development, and retention; manage headcount and position adjustments; enhance individual capabilities through performance evaluation, goal setting, reporting, and analysis.
- Manage divisional and departmental budgets, including expense management, revenue tracking, and reporting; oversee the procurement and management of physical facilities and equipment, including supplies and inventory; participate in planning for capital improvement projects.
- Ensure the maintenance of a safe working environment. Model and uphold safe work practices, adhering to organizational safety protocols, and addressing or reporting unsafe practices and conditions to leadership.
- Stay informed on contemporary animal welfare practices and philosophies. Lead and ensure staff alignment with Best Friends' vision, philosophy, values, and progressive industry standards. Provide feedback, coaching, and training to staff and volunteers as necessary to meet these standards.
- Demonstrated leadership and management experience in animal operations with a focus on lifesaving; over 10 years of proven management experience, including at least 2 years at the director/executive level, overseeing large-scale strategy, operations, budgeting, and staffing.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with a humane organization required; familiarity with budget management is essential.
- Experience in utilizing statistical data to inform, develop, and implement strategic plans at the division and department levels, including change management strategies; proven attention to detail with advanced organizational and time management skills.
- Customer-focused, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; comfort with nonjudgmental philosophies.
- Strong leadership capabilities with the ability to make decisive actions in challenging and fast-paced environments; excellent interpersonal skills, a team player, energetic, tactful, and diplomatic, capable of working with diverse backgrounds and handling sensitive situations.
- Exceptional communication skills, public speaking, and presentation experience with the ability to advocate professionally for Best Friends' positions on various issues; experience in supporting and developing relationships with volunteers and donors.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with shelter software/animal management systems is preferred, along with a willingness to learn new systems.
- Must be capable of:
- Performing repetitive tasks for extended periods, including typing, sitting, walking, and hand motions. Working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
- Being exposed to dogs, cats, and other animals of various sizes, temperaments, and health statuses.
- Possessing a valid driver's license that meets Best Friends Animal Society's driving standards; ability to travel, including overnight stays, as required.
- Flexibility in daily hours and workdays according to departmental needs; the position may include weekends, evenings, and holiday shifts.
