Job Summary

The University of Hawaii Foundation is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Associate Director of Development to join our team. This key role will be responsible for identifying, engaging, and soliciting prospective donors for major and leadership gifts that support the vision of the University of Hawaii.

Key Responsibilities
  • Development
    • Build and manage a portfolio of 55-60 major gift prospects, including those identified by the Associate Director and those assigned by the Senior Director and the Dean of the College of Arts, Languages & Letters, the University Librarian of Library Services, and the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences.
    • Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors for major gifts of $25,000 and above.
    • Develop a clear understanding of the University's strengths and philanthropic opportunities, and develop cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators.
    • Steward current and past donors to the programs of the College of Arts, Languages & Letters, Library Services, and the College of Natural Sciences to assure ongoing involvement and increased giving.
    • Work as a positive and productive member of the University of Hawaii Foundation Development team for the benefit of the total University.
  • Development Support
    • Organize and facilitate meetings, schedule and coordinate dates, times, venues, attendance, agenda, and facilities, compile briefings or take notes when necessary, and provide administrative support and follow-up on matters arising from internal, external, and donor meetings.
    • Assist the Senior Director prepare for meetings and other activities, then document and organize the follow-up requirements at the end of these activities.
    • Research, draft, and edit written communications that may include briefing materials for meetings and events, proposals, reports, and correspondence.
    • Gather, assemble, and refine material and data required for correspondence, memorandums, reports, or other material.
    • Regularly deal with diverse matters requiring a broad knowledge of the Foundation's organizational operations and policies necessary to ensure appropriate decision-making protocols are followed.
Requirements
  • Minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in a non-profit setting, preferably in development, educational, or membership organization, with proven success in developing major gift strategies, soliciting and closing gifts, and developing recommendations for stimulating interest in the organization's program.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and database and records management.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Must be highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Must be multi-task oriented and able to work under deadline pressures.
  • Ability to work effectively in a large, complex, and dynamic organization balancing competing priorities.
  • Professional, self-starter, reliable, and team player.
  • Sensitivity to confidential information.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and eloquently in written and spoken form.
  • Ability to develop and manage key donor events.
  • Ability to inspire and manage volunteers.

  • Ability to manage and manipulate databases.
  • Experience in higher education a plus.

Working Conditions

The Associate Director will work primarily in an office environment and will need to sit or stand for extended periods while either working at a computer, attending meetings, or performing deskwork. The Associate Director may need to visit areas of the University campus, as well as locations in and around O'ahu. This position will involve travel, mostly by auto, occasionally by air, and may require overnight stays. Employee must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record or an acceptable mode of transportation. The employee may need to work some evenings and weekends and must be able to work to the demands of the position, which may exceed a 40-hour workweek. Must be able and willing to travel interisland and nationally upon request.
