POSITION SUMMARY

The Academic Support Specialist provides comprehensive individual and group tutoring services in designated academic disciplines within an open lab and/or personalized settings to enhance instructional programs. This role may involve training and assessing fellow tutors and contributing to the development of tutoring resources and materials as necessary.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Proficient in delivering advanced tutoring to students in open lab/self-paced environments that foster a learning atmosphere conducive to problem-solving and critical thinking, ensuring that students' knowledge is thoroughly engaged.
  • Skilled in conducting both group and individual tutoring sessions to identify areas where students require additional support.
  • Able to motivate and encourage students through constructive feedback and reinforcement.
  • Capable of explaining concepts in a manner that is easily understood by students.
  • Possesses the ability to perform essential functions utilizing expertise within specific subject areas.
  • Effective in building and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, staff, and faculty regarding tutoring assignments.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all student information, materials, and discussions within the tutoring context.
  • Assists students in developing effective study skills and techniques to enhance their academic performance by tailoring tutoring methods to their needs.
  • Demonstrates excellent academic expertise and adapts tutoring strategies to meet student requirements.
  • Experience working with underserved and marginalized communities is preferred.
  • Exhibits patience and possesses outstanding interpersonal, coaching, oral, and written communication skills to interact with a diverse student population in a dynamic environment.
  • Punctuality is essential; sessions must begin promptly, utilizing time effectively for academic tasks while focusing on student needs.
  • Provides exceptional customer service.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Delivers advanced tutoring to Dallas College students in open lab/self-paced settings through collaborative interactions to assess student needs, provide constructive feedback, engage critical thinking, and promote independence.
  • Supports students individually or in small groups using appropriate resources to clarify concepts and assist with assigned materials.
  • Helps students develop study plans to enhance study methods, including selecting suitable resources.
  • Engages in activities that support students in improving academic performance, including discussing class materials and test questions; offers insights on learning strategies.
  • Creates a positive learning environment and upholds high standards for academic success as students navigate coursework, assignments, and projects.
  • Acts as a role model to inspire students to reach their full potential.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of resource materials needed to illustrate learning objectives for use in tutoring settings.
  • Keeps records as required under departmental guidelines.
  • Ensures confidentiality of student records.
  • May develop and present tutor training and participate in recruitment activities as assigned.
  • May provide indirect supervision to lower-level tutors.
  • Completes required Dallas College Professional Development training hours per academic year.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Normal physical job functions performed within a standard office environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with physical challenges to perform essential duties and responsibilities. Occasionally may be required to lift and carry materials weighing up to 30 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of four semesters (or two years) of college-level coursework (or equivalent); or any combination of two of the following qualifications: additional specialized training; indirect supervisory duties; experience in a related field.
  • Official transcripts will be required.
  • Able to work after school hours, nights, and/or weekends.
  • Bilingual or multi-language skills preferred.
