Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 6:30 AM - 8:00 AM and 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM across various locations.

Position Summary:

Under the guidance of the Site Leader and/or Extension Coordinator, the primary role of this position is to assist in the effective management of year-round programs for school-aged children. During the academic year, this role functions as a Site Assistant for our Before & After School initiatives and transitions to a Camp Counselor during the summer months. The individual will be well-versed in the YMCA's philosophy, operational procedures, and group dynamics, while embodying a commitment to character development as the core mission of the YMCA.

Key Responsibilities:

The following duties are essential to this role, and additional tasks may be assigned as necessary:

  • Maintain current certifications in CPR/AED and other required training.
  • Assist in executing weekly lesson plans and educational activities.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times.
  • Foster positive relationships with participants, parents, school staff, and the community using effective communication skills.
  • Participate in all mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Assist in the provision of meals and snacks to participants.
  • Keep all program areas organized and safe.
  • Address conflicts and behavioral issues among participants.
  • Arrive punctually with appropriate attire and a positive demeanor.
  • Uphold a professional image of the YMCA within the facility and community.
  • Collaborate effectively with fellow YMCA staff members.
  • Enforce the YMCA Code of Conduct and adhere to guidelines outlined in the staff training manual.
  • Document incidents using the appropriate reporting forms for Coordinators and Directors.
  • Be prepared to change school sites or travel as needed.
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned as required.
Expected Outcomes:

A successful Extension Assistant will contribute to a well-organized program that positively impacts children by promoting values of compassion, integrity, respect, and accountability. The program will be recognized by parents and the community as a safe, nurturing, and positive environment. All facilities, activities, and events will be adequately supervised and staffed to ensure high-quality programming.

Qualifications:

Supervisory Role: Responsible for overseeing all participants in the Extension program.

Education and Experience: A high school diploma or GED is required, with preference given to candidates with experience working with youth.

Language Proficiency: Ability to read and interpret safety guidelines, operational instructions, and procedural manuals. Capable of writing routine reports and communicating effectively with groups of parents, students, and staff.

Certifications: Must hold CPR/AED certification for all age groups, along with training in Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention, and complete a Medical Exam and TB Test.

Skills and Abilities: Strong interpersonal skills are essential.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of this position require regular use of hands for handling objects, standing, walking, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.
