Position Summary

The Lead Surety Bond Underwriter is responsible for generating underwriting profits while safeguarding against potential losses through astute risk assessment and management of various contract surety bonds, adhering to established authority limits. This role is ideal for a seasoned underwriter eager to leverage their skills in a supportive environment that fosters professional development and success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enhance company profitability and mitigate losses by judiciously evaluating and deciding on all types of bonds, focusing primarily on contract bonds, while efficiently managing a substantial volume of submissions.
  • Serve as a key point of contact between agents, contractors, and branches to uphold positive relationships and facilitate the resolution of underwriting inquiries or issues.
  • Engage in regular travel within the designated territory using various modes of transportation to maintain existing business relationships and pursue new opportunities.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Assistant Underwriters, fostering strong working relationships with agency partners and ensuring efficient bond processing.
  • Conduct on-site evaluations of contractors to review records and gather pertinent information for informed underwriting decisions.
  • Stay informed on market trends, economic shifts, legal developments, and competitor practices to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Implement underwriting modifications as directed by management to ensure the profitability of diverse business classes.
  • Utilize Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software to maintain the agency database and support marketing growth objectives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
This role requires a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience, along with a minimum of three years in bond underwriting or a comparable combination of education and experience. Candidates with a degree in Finance or Accounting are preferred, although other relevant financial services experience may be considered.

Additional Requirements
The ideal candidate must possess a satisfactory driving record as defined by company policy.

Working as a Lead Surety Bond Underwriter necessitates the ability to operate independently and effectively in a dynamic environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Office applications is essential. Key skills include excellent verbal and written communication, strong organizational abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and the capacity to manage confidential information discreetly.

Physical and Environmental Demands
This position involves extended periods of sitting, with occasional standing and walking. The role may require lifting or carrying up to 10 pounds. Ergonomic equipment is available to support employee comfort.
