Job Description

Job Summary:

The Controller, Finance will lead and direct the accounting and financial reporting activities for the United Nations Foundation. This position is responsible for the general ledger, payroll, revenue, billing, accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, audits, and external financial reporting. The position has functional responsibility for maintaining the organization's accounting policies, procedures, and financial controls.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directs Accounting and Financial Reporting Activities: Directs all operational accounting activities of the organization, including but not limited to: general ledger, financial close, cash and banking, expense and revenue accounting, billing, accounts payable and receivable, payroll allocations, grant and other expense reporting. Ensures accurate and timely processing of the functions listed above.
  • External Financial Reporting: Directs external financial reporting activities and ensures accurate and timely dissemination of financial reports, including but not limited to: financial statements, Form 990, Single Audit, and annual audits
  • Revenue Recognition and Billing: Oversees revenue recognition, billing to ensure the accurate and timely management of all accounts receivable aging components, including: billing, cash receipts application, grant administration
  • Compliance and Internal Controls: Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems to ensure compliance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements. Maintains robust internal controls and safeguards for all financial operation and reporting activities.
  • Team Leadership and Management: Prioritizes, organizes, distributes, and coordinates the flow of work for the team. Guides team performance and implements efficiencies.
  • Team Development and Coaching: Manage, coach, and develop team members
  • Policy and Procedure Implementation: Ensures prescribed policies, procedures, and schedules are followed. Ensures that team priorities are aligned to meet organizational goals.
  • Financial Analysis and Reporting: Reviews and analyzes financial statements and information, and provides management updates on a monthly basis.
  • Continuous Improvement: Establish and oversee roadmap for continuous improvement in transaction processing systems and implementation of changes to the systems to reflect new types of transactions, and integration with other departmental systems.

Requirements:

  • Education and Certification: Bachelor's degree and CPA certification in current active status required
  • Experience: At least 10 years of progressive professional experience; including 5+ years as a supervising manager overseeing a team of employees and overseeing the monthly closing process.
  • Non-Profit Experience: Experience as a nonprofit Assistant Controller or higher preferred.
  • Skills and Abilities: Strong organization and problem-solving skills with the proven ability to continuously identify and implement practical solutions.
  • Financial Management: Demonstrated expertise in non-profit financial management and accounting.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Strong ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with colleagues.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint).
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail, excellent proofreading skills; ability to produce documents of high quality, while meeting deadlines.
  • Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Excellent problem-solving capability; exceptional critical thinking, analytical and research skills.
  • Independence and Teamwork: Able to work independently with minimal supervision and maximum collaboration in a team environment.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, creative, flexible, organized and self-motivated, with good planning and follow-through.
