PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: The Chief Financial Officer is tasked with overseeing the financial functions of the organization, ensuring fiscal responsibility and long-term viability. This position will manage all aspects of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and compliance obligations. The CFO will collaborate closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to formulate and execute financial strategies that align with the organization's mission and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Oversight

  • Design and implement financial strategies that are in harmony with the organization's mission and objectives.
  • Supervise and direct all financial activities, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Guarantee the accuracy and integrity of financial records, encompassing the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial systems.
  • Prepare and deliver financial reports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors, offering insights and recommendations as necessary.
  • Ensure adherence to all financial reporting and regulatory standards, including tax submissions, audits, and other compliance requirements.
  • Manage relationships with external entities, including banks, auditors, and other financial service providers.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, collaborating with program managers and stakeholders to create realistic and achievable budgets.
  • Track actual performance against budget and provide ongoing updates and analysis to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Develop and maintain financial forecasting models that facilitate long-term financial planning and decision-making.

Strategic Leadership

  • Work alongside the Executive Director and Executive team to create and implement strategic plans that further the organization's mission and vision.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to the Finance team, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with the Executive/Management team to devise and execute strategies that support the organization's mission and objectives.

Board Engagement and Reporting

  • Report on the financial status of the organization to the Board of Directors, including regular updates on budget performance, forecasts, and financial risks and opportunities.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to establish and implement financial policies and procedures that reflect the organization's values and strategic goals.
  • Represent the organization at internal and external meetings, providing financial insights and support as necessary.

Tax Compliance

  • Oversee all tax submissions and compliance obligations, ensuring that the organization adheres to all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and financial service providers to ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements.

Collaborative Responsibilities

  • Engage regularly with the management team for the development and implementation of performance monitoring tools, assess growth opportunities, and enhance team operations.
  • Act on behalf of the Executive Director in collaboration with the Executive Team for various initiatives, serving as an interim liaison to all relevant committees.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Primarily in an office environment, with opportunities for remote work. Occasional travel may be required for meetings and community engagements.

WORKING HOURS: Standard hours are Monday to Friday, with flexibility subject to the Executive Director's approval.

EQUIPMENT USE: Regular use of computers, printers, and standard office equipment is expected.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Responsibilities necessitate initiative, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Manage deadlines and high-pressure situations effectively.

COMMUNICATION DEMANDS: Effective communication, both verbal and written, is essential, including presenting to groups and providing clear instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in financial management, with at least 3 years in a nonprofit setting.
  • Demonstrated success in financial management, including strategy development, budget oversight, and compliance.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with experience in building and guiding high-performing teams.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of conveying financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Commitment to the organization's mission and values.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Four years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with basic accounting principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations at various governmental levels.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and accounting software.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work under pressure.
