Position Overview:

ABOUT THE ROLE

VHB is seeking a Land Development Engineer to enhance our Land Development and Planning and Design team. This role presents an exciting opportunity to collaborate within a vibrant team across various disciplines, providing exposure to a broad spectrum of projects in both scale and complexity. Our clientele encompasses commercial, residential, industrial, and hospitality sectors, including notable entities such as municipal governments and federal agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop site/civil engineering plans and specifications for diverse projects, including large-scale industrial sites, healthcare facilities, and residential developments.
  • Assist in the preparation of land development design and permitting documentation.
  • Oversee project financial performance and maintain client relationships.
  • Prepare and evaluate drawings and specifications that document the engineered systems.
  • Engage in meetings with clients, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to identify their requirements and address design/permitting challenges.
  • Supervise design team operations during the Construction Administration phase.
  • Guide and mentor junior staff members.
  • Manage projects of varying sizes and complexities.
  • Identify new project opportunities and oversee proposal submissions.

Essential Skills and Attributes:

  • Expertise in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microsoft Project, and MS Office; proficiency in ArcGIS is a plus.
  • Ability to implement an integrated services approach with a thorough understanding of design, detailing, and construction drawing preparation.
  • Familiarity with land development construction codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of construction materials and detailing, including the creation of detailed drawings and specifications.
  • Experience with sustainable design initiatives and low-impact development practices.
  • Exceptional innovative design capabilities.
  • Strong analytical and research skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities.
  • Self-driven with a keen attention to detail.
  • Critical thinking and multitasking capabilities.
  • Able to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential and interest in business development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive engineering experience on complex projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in Virginia or the ability to obtain it within a specified timeframe.
  • Proficient in site layout, grading, utility design, and stormwater management.
  • Experience in producing site plans, construction documents, specifications, and engineering reports.
  • Understanding of the regional market dynamics.
