Position Overview:

ABOUT THE ROLE

VHB is seeking a Land Development Engineer to join our expanding Land Development and Planning and Design team in Richmond, VA. This role presents an exciting opportunity to collaborate within a vibrant team across various disciplines, providing exposure to a diverse range of projects of varying sizes and complexities. Our clientele includes sectors such as commercial, residential, industrial, hospitality, municipal, and federal agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop civil engineering plans and specifications for a variety of projects, including large-scale industrial, biotech, institutional, healthcare, and residential developments.
  • Assist in the preparation of land development design and permitting documentation.
  • Oversee project financial performance and maintain client relationships.
  • Prepare and review technical drawings and specifications to document designed systems.
  • Engage with clients, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to identify their needs and address design and permitting challenges.
  • Supervise the design team's activities during the Construction Administration phase.
  • Manage the workflow and development of junior staff members.
  • Lead small to large-scale projects effectively.
  • Identify new project opportunities and manage proposal submissions.

Essential Skills and Attributes:

  • Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microsoft Project, and MS Office; ArcGIS skills are a plus.
  • Ability to implement an integrated services approach with a comprehensive understanding of design, details, and construction drawing preparation.
  • Familiarity with land development construction codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of construction materials, detailing, and specifications.
  • Experience with sustainable design initiatives and low-impact development practices (e.g., LEED, Envision).
  • Strong innovative design capabilities.
  • Research and analytical skills for project development.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with a keen attention to detail.
  • Critical thinking and multitasking abilities.
  • Adept at working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential and interest in business development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive engineering experience on complex projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in Virginia or the ability to obtain it within a year.
  • Expertise in site layout, grading, utility design, and stormwater management.
  • Experience in producing site plans, construction documents, specifications, and engineering reports.
  • Understanding of the regional market dynamics.
